I have ordered the Y connector as well as the fuel level sender gasket. I figure they're both probably original and if not already broken, could well end up that way soon. I actually think that most of what I'm smelling is probably from the fuel level sender, based on getting a stronger whiff when I pull the cover off, then again I didn't see any evidence of actual gas there. Anyway, I'm going to replace both. I would guess, based on feedback in this and other threads, between those two fixes I have a good chance of nailing the culprit. I could still end up having some other issue, but those are pretty easy to rule out.

What is the recommendation for amount of fuel in the tank when changing the fuel level sender gasket? I've heard it's more dangerous with a mostly empty tank due to more fumes, then again maybe the tank full of fuel sloshing around isn't so great either. I'm actually not sure if I have to pull the sender out to replace the gasket or if I can do it where it sits, I'll have to see what it looks like when I open it up. The writeup by Dwayne has him pulling it out, just not sure if that was necessary or not.

I won't attempt to change them until the tank is at 3/4 or under. You will have to remove the sender to put on the new gasket.

Why are you worried about vapors? Smoking while doing this job?

My suspect is the breather hose on top of the tank that runs thru the frame rail up to the filler neck. You can't see it it the top of the tank but u can by the filler. When u fill up full the fuel level is higher dip in the tank where it wraps around the frame rail. This hose allows the air to escape. Mine was hard and crispy and leaked when more than 3/4 full. I dropped the tank and replaced it and that solved the problem.

WYIT, carefully pry open the plug, do not disorient the pins, clean, and Deoxit electrical connections before re-installing. Also, don't forget to have a bucket handy in the hatch area to put the fuel level sending unit which will drip a little gas. Replace gasket if it's leaking or not, they are inexpensive. T

You're advising I have the cigar AFTER I'm finished then?

Most definitely!

Grandprixweiss928, I have the gasket and also the y-connector for up front, to combat this fuel smell issue, but if neither work it sounds like that breather tube will be next on the list. I'd rather not drop the tank though, so fingers are crossed it's one or both of these other things.

I suppose one smell will over power the other. I've got a Rennlisters GT here, I think I'll try this and see what happens.

FWIW, likely nothing....I spent a few years pumping gas with a butt hanging out of my mouth with not even a hint of an explosive response to my foul habit.....

No vapour at the right mix with O2, and no live spark = well, nada.....

Therefore, said Rennlister may rest (relatively) easy....
