Smile Back from the strip!

Hello everyone!

I've been an avid reader of the site for many yers, but never took the time to register till now.

I finally managed to take time off and take my '85 5-speed to the local 1/4 mile track (Toronto Speedway...aka Cayuga) on Friday. The weather was less than ideal with high humidity(+80%), and temperatures in the mid to high +20C. The track condition was a little on the slippery side during the day, but became better after sunset.

To my amazement I managed a best time of 14.32sec @ 99 mph. The 60" time was in the 2.1X sec. range. Most of my good runs were in the 14.5 sec range with a best trap speed of just under 100 mph (99.81mph).

Considering the conditions, I was very pleased with the numbers, specially since the factory rates the '85 5-speed @ 14.2X sec.

I think that with cooler weather and alot less humidity this number is achivable.

Has anyone managed to get a better time than the factory stated 14.2sec in there '85-86 5-speed?

I'm looking for vehicles with stock or near stock configurations.

You are not far off at all. I think you could easily get there with better conditions and a little practice. I pulled a 13.8 @ 104 in my GT, just shy of an old C&D test which showed 13.7. That was good enough for me!

The launch is important, if you can cut 1 tenth from your 60' time it will translate into 2 tenths in the QM.

The best I managed in my AT '85 with chips and a cat bypass was 14.5, top speed 99.75mph.

Then again, I had some terrible launches and was overall pretty timid about causing damage. First time jitters.

Boy, That was pretty early this summer. I have since been perfecting my launches with the GS455 The five speed 928 is kind of tricky, especially when mine has stiff track springs in it. I was dumping the clutch around 2500-3000 I think. That was just enough spin to get it into the powerband without just roasting the tires. The worst part on the GT is the last second shift from 3rd to 4th. The slightly shorter rear end gears on the GT probably hurt my ET's a little. I think the 85-88 cars make it in third even with the slightly lower redline.

I was running the car pretty hard but hey, its a Porsche right It felt like it could do it all night though. The car was as consistent as the driver. Easy launches put me at 14.1-14.2 at 100.

I did buy a different car for the drags though. The wheel hop and foot to the floor shifts are not things I plan to regularly subject the car to. Besides, once the GS is back from an engine rebuild, it ought to run in the low 12's. That car is WAY better suited to that kind of abuse and MUCH less expensive to repair.

Brent,

You are right..........The 85-86 5-speeds can do the 1/4 mile without shifting into 4th gear. The RPMs are just shy of the rev limiter, but slightly in the redline(+200rpm).

I foregot to mention that I used an almost worn down set of Brigstone Blizzaks for the track. I figured that the decreased surface area of the winter tires will make up for the tall rear end gearing. The winter tires gave me just enogh wheel spin to get a good launched. The start line was treated with some sort of a track adhesive. This made spinning the tires very difficult, and caused me to bog out on a couple of occasions. The only way to spin the tires was to keep the revs high during launch.

This event was just a regular "Test & Tune" - "Legal Street Racing". Therefore the officialls had to treat/spray the track for the sub 10 sec cars.

Besides the K&N filter (only there for reusabilty value) my 928 is 100% stock. I do have the AC belt off (AC needs repair & conversion).

Other than all this, the car is stock. The radiator fan bearing is developing excessive wear, and will be replacing with an electric unit this winter.
