I believe you are saying, your automatic will not go into first gear with the gear selector. You said you checked control cables, but I only know to check for slack at the transmission. The cable that attaches to the "selector arm" in the picture. There is an adjustment for that cable. Or the black switch located to the right of the selector arm may need to be replaced.
Your title says something about "passing" this would indicate the kickdown relay.
I would look in the relay panel with the XVII relay (kickdown relay). It is a one of a kind, that is, there isn't another one in there you can substitute.
Maybe Alan can help, I believe you could jumper (connecting pin 87 to 30) this one to see if the relay is functioning. Or you could pay $82 for a new relay and replace that relay.

has a product called Relay Buddy, that checks relays. Handy to have.
I hope this helps, more details are needed in your description.

I'll get back to Philippe tonight and try help him with the translation. Anyway, the best as I can!

Alors, allons-y!
Guys,
I'll try to help Philippe by translating his French post.
Of course, my English is not perfect (sorry about that) but I'll do my best.
So, here we go.
Sorry for the electronic translation!!!
Thanks for your posts.
My car is a 1990 S4 automatic.
I have the car since two years ago and made a lot of due maintenance but never been able to make the car start in firs gear.
I tried to tight and slack the cable that goes to the transmission, changed the oil, change the valves (?) and the ball bearings (?) in the transmission.
By-passed the kick down switch without any success!!!
It would be cool if you could help me.

Philippe,
SteveG,
I asked Philippe few things regarding your post #3.

It has been a long time since my high school French exam. It is the vacuum modulator. It receives vacuum from the engine and needs to hold vacuum. Check if the rubber cap is air tight and if it holds vacuum.
