Default Panorama - what would Ferry think?

From the new Panorama (Oct 2014), an interesting letter to the editor and the response regarding the Panamera S E-Hybrid and it's progenitor:

"MORE FERDINAND THAN FERRY

I continue to enjoy the direction that Panorama has taken and especially seeing bylines like those of Joe Rusz, Ted West, and Randy Leffingwell. I'm also enjoying Pete Stout's always thoughtful Editor's Note. In his July 2014 column, he asks himself – and his readers – the question whether the Panamera S E-Hybrid is a "true" Porsche.

When I take off my rose-colored Porsche Design glasses, I have to conclude that it is. I think that we Americans tend to get stuck in our own "exceptional" view of the world and often fail to see reality through others' eyes. The 356 and the 911 that introduced the Porsche brand to us weren't necessarily the cars that Ferry Porsche and his team wanted to build. In the years 1948-1972, they lived in a defeated, divided, and occupied country. The 356 and 911 were "austerity-cars" that Porsche had to build in a country desperately trying to boost itself from the ashes that the previous generation's terrible hubris landed them in.

I love my 911 Carrera, but reading Ferry Porsche's own words recored in his autobiography 'We at Porsche' last summer made me realize that Ferry Porsche and Dr. Ernst Fuhrmann's ultimate expression was truly the 928. The Panamera is the 928's worthy successor.

So, I'm going to respectfully disagree with Pete's assertion that the Panamera S E-Hybrid is "more Ferdinand than Ferry". I think that Porsche today is producing exactly the sort of cars that Ferry would have wanted them to. I'm keeping my Carrera, but I'm also arranging for a test drive of the new Macan and I'll very likely be parking a practical Macan alongside that beloved air-sucker, not a 991 or 981.

Editor – You make a great point about the 928's place in Porsche history and today's Panamera – though I think the 996, 997, and the 991 were all influenced by Porsche's first truly great GT."

Wow. Interesting timing. Talk about coincidence with the Panorama discussion going on.
