Pat,

Trivia question. What did Porsche do with the engine that was in the Audi 100?

Good question- I don't think that V3 ever made it out of the African desert tests. V3 went in but, there is nothing showing it ever leaving the African desert testing with W6.

As for V4, could it be in a museum in Weissach, Zuffenhausen, or perhaps at VW or Audi? Gotta consult my archives of 928 info for that answer...hmmmm

Pat,

Should have said what did Porsche do with the 4 cylinder Audi Engine out of the 100?

I dunno what Porsche did with it, but my Audi 100 ate its transmission within 15K miles. Audi forgot to put an access to the rear shocks in the rear. If you had to change them you were SOL. Generally a POS!!

Ernest,

Sounds like Porsche when they didn't split the bellhousing and provide a slip joint on the 924/944. Changing the throwout bearing or any other clutch component requires dropping the exhaust, transaxle, torque tube, etc.

BTW The Audi 100(LS) engine was used in the 924 with a few modifications.

The 924 was the first Porsche I ever drove. It was in 1978 and it was the most underwhelming experience I've ever has in a car. I seriously thought there was something wrong with it until I was reassured by the owner that it ran perfectly.

Ernest,

Do you mean to say the torque of that 95 HP monster didn't overwhelm you? That was a very common reality with the early ones. The 80 NA's were bumped up to 125 HP and the turbo were initially 150HP. My 81 with 1 bar boost and higher compression ratio is getting close to 200. The 924 GT's run at LeMans were over 300 HP. The one common element to all of them was the Audi 100LS block.

Dennis, I would think our cars were rolled down the assembly line same time with one car in between. My car is 347.

Joe,

Porsche used to skip numbers so they could have been side by side. BTW On an older thread (2 or three years ago) we found two lower serial numbers owned by folks on the Rennlist. Now it's three older than mine. BTW it is still my daily driver. Tried parking it a few weeks and drove the 931 but the 928 got cranking so I'm back to driving it daily.

Lightbulb 77 is 4.5L

The seller of the ebay 77 model returned my email. Quote: "Please forgive the Typo. the engine is in fact a 4.5 litre"

Some of the first engines were 5 liter with the plan to possibly increase to about 5.5 liters for the production car . In the face of the "oil crisis" Porsche flinched and down sized to 4.5 .......BIG MISTAKE if it had been a 325 -350 HP 5.5 liter in 1977 the 928 might have been considered a "Super car" and compared too tested against cars other than the XJS , Mercedes 450 SLC . The 170 MPH Holbert landspeed record could have happened TEN YEARS earlier ! Perhaps the 911 series would have become as obsolete as a 356 ...

Does any one besides me have a yen for the 77 on eBay? The third car sold with a pre-production serial number sounds like it should be an interesting project, at least.
