It's the odometer gear that has failed. Replacement requires cluster removal. Looks like this.

Shoot Roger a message and he can fix you up with a gear. I'm sure there are a few write ups on how to do it.

It's a great time to upgrade to LED's or put new bulbs in. As an example of what will happen, I put LED's in for the illumination last year and a few days ago my turn signal bulb went out. I knew I should have put in new bulbs but I was trying to save myself a bit of $$. Dumb, now I'll be going in again but am replacing all the bulbs with LEDs.

Sean

Where did you get your LED's? Can you provide the model #s?

Thanks!
Brian

When you order the gear, ask Roger to see what he sold to me. The first gear he sent did not fit my 85 and we found out there is more than one KPH gear size.

There are a few different gears. Different tooth counts.

I took mine apart, found the pieces of the gear, kind of reassembled them and got an approximate tooth count. It was close enough that Roger & I could figure out which one I needed. He offered to send a couple different ones and have me return the ones I didn't need as an option too.

Dwayne's writeup mentions excess molding flash on the gears that needs to be cleaned up.
The one I got from Roger was well made enough that I didn't need to do this.

FWIW there are a few different gear makers,
some of the gear makers have shoddy molds thus the gears can jamb.
Roger has an excellent supplier of gears they are perfect.

To answer your other question on what you can fix,
the number shaft can get spread out thus the numbers will be able to move sideways on the shaft.
The cure is to measure the clearance with a feeler gauge then find a washer and fit it to the end of the number stack furthest from the gears,

This so the numbers are pushed tight but still have freedom to turn. other wise the number can jamb.

NOTE the fix for using inferior gears is to carefully examine the gear with a glass find the sprue or flashing and remove it with some fine paper and razor,
this is what will jamb the gear from mating with the other driven gear
