Default Checking timing belt tension and a tensioner warning question

So do you guys generally drain coolant every time you check the tension? Is it that much easier with the upper radiator hose out of the way?

Regarding the tensioner warning, mine is not connected, so I get the warning light after 3 minutes. To check the system, I tried grounding it, but the light didn't turn off... Do I need to restart the engine with it grounded for this to work, or is my warning system simply not working?

Just did this for the first time ever on Friday - easier than i had thought. I didn't drain coolant or remove the rad hoses AND i had two -16 oil hoses running up and over the distributor cap from a dry sump.

You will need to restart the engine with it grounded, the light stays on once it comes on.
