Rear Seat Delete
Just thought I would share my latest project to delete the rear seats in the 82 5 speed.
Why you say? Well with the huge stereo set up, there is zero room for anything under the hatch and this will dissuade my 17 year old son from driving around with 4 teenagers stuffed into the car.
After my son quits driving the car next year after finishing HS, I will get rid of the large speaker enclosure and mount everything flush on the forward panel. Three lag screws and 4 speaker screws and the whole thing comes off. Cut out speaker holes, re upholster with vinyl and you have a completely new look.
Access to the battery is very easy. Just remove the tool kit, push forward a little and the rear section comes right out. It is held in place with heavy duty velcro and is raised up to level with 2 x 4 blocks.
I used 1/2 inch marine plywood as a base with 1/2 inch foam and marine vinyl as upholstery. I used 2x4s to frame the seat cut outs using the seat bolt holes as anchors and it is very sturdy.

The amp is 1200 watts and will blow your ears off.
It was very difficult to get the radius correct on the curves. I had to add extra foam to get a tight fit.
This is definitely a kids stereo. Next summer when junior goes into the USAF, the enclosure comes out and I will flush mount the amp, sub and the two Excelon speakers on the deck the current enclosure sits.
A little more "age appropriate stereo set up" for the old man.
This set up weighs about as much as a passenger in a rear seat, but does sound good.
For anyone installing a hi end stereo setup, DO NOT use cheap RCA cables. Invest in a twisted, shielded 6 input/output cable.
I upgraded to a 180 amp alternator and developed an annoying alternator whine. After I chased every other possible solution, replacing the RCA cables fixed the problem.
Believe it or not, the enclosure does not block the rear view mirror.
