Gas monkey: petrol in engine oil

Just watched part #2 of the smokey & the bandit sequence. The engine of the just rebuilt Trans Am went terribly wrong after running in. Metal particles in the oil. It appeared that the oil was mixed with petrol. A quick Google search learned that this can happen due to a faulty fuel pressure regulator or a leaking fuel injector. Any experience with this? Any chance of this happening to a CIS engine? How to recognise a faulty fuel pressure regulator? My injectors have been cleaned and tested but 2 of them appeared to be leaking slightly. Replace just in case?

Old injectors can leak down pressure in the fuel rail to the engine. Engine failure resulting from this does not seem common. In the US we can very cheaply run Used Oil Analyses (UOAs) by companies like Blackstone. For $25 we can send in an oil sample and they will test it for a variety of paramters including metals and % fuel. http://www.blackstone-labs.com/gas-engine.php. If you are concerned, you may check around to see if this sort of service is offered in the Netherlands.

I had a leaking CIS injector on a different car, and it did put a lot of fuel into the crankcase. I caught it early and changed the oil. It's not common because it requires the fuel pump to be running when the engine isn't. This is true of any FI system but with CIS there's no electronic solenoid to fail open, it's just a spring.
Best way to check is to remove all the injectors from the intake boss, connect them back on the delivery pipes, bridge the fuel pump relay and just look for any injectors that drool or spray. Have a fire extinguisher handy.
