From a 928 newbie, what's your expert reactions to pin stripes? Will it act like a scarlet letter and cause me to be shunned at Third Coast?
I thought I had a minor paint flaw under the hatch key. Got out a flashlight and magnifying glass and discovered it is a signature. Looks like : Rick '90. I'm guessing this is the signature of the guy who added the pair of pin stripes that run around the car from front bumper to front bumper.
Being an old guy, as evidenced by needing a magnifying glass to discover this, I like the look. I do think flames would have been off putting, though.
My other discoveries on this recently auction-purchased car have not been as benign. Cracked bell housing and bent rear sway bar were the more serious looking problems seen when it got up on a lift. I'm hoping Sean is going to make it possible to drive it to Third Coast and back.
Funny how all that works. I actually like the rub strips. But the community has told me otherwise. Someone told me not to pull the spoiler in favor of the wing. I think the black cars look sharp 'cause the bumper molding and the panel seams all over the car blend with the black paint...but when I was considering painting the bumper trim molding and the front spoiler to match body color for a smoother look...once again...a no-no.
But ya know what? A buddy from double oak here in the 'hood, told me that It's my car. I should do what I like. And I gotta agree. Why I was so worried about everyone's approval I'll never know. Ha! I build nice cars, everybody likes them...mostly. So anyway...I bought a big fat wing from a Subaru WRX ! Yeah baby!!
So...ummm...anyway, make it yours. I'm damn sure gonna make mine mine!
And, I'm just kiddin' about the WRX wing. It's not fat.

Reason: the usual...I dont think my "r" key is woking.
We all agree that it's not a Porsche thing or even a European thing in general
that i know of. The paint used by the majority of stripers is a durable lettering enamel.
That said..don't mess with it.
RDK's later car has clear coat and this would help i'd think when removing these. Plus and early show quality car like Brad's can pull it off.
If I were to learn to do striping, I'd use a lacquer paint so i could remove it very easily from an enamel paint job.
But they don't use this they use enamel so there would be some effort made on the surface of Brad's 928 to remove it.
If they're already there and done well; they compliment the car's shape and color.. on a nice original paint 928 like Brads
(early non met paint car without clear), I wouldn't want to be the guy responsible for removing them.
Once you start you have to finish.
Understand from a previous owner that this iris blue came from factory with the pin stripes. He liked them because they made the car stand out as different, and was disappointed when I told him they had been removed. After being removed, if you look really closely at just the right angle in the right light the paint is raised a bit where the pin stripes were. I never saw them in person but was told they were getting pretty ragged looking around the edges which sounded more like some sort of decal than paint.

I thought the pic of your beautiful 928 with the striping was done really
creatively the way it stopped short and kicked up.
That's pretty cool that it was factory applied.
Porsche is known for it's ability to fill custom orders.
I think it looks sharp Brad, don't sweat it. And yes, it will be 100% driveable before 3rd Coast
Don't believe him Brad. He will be the one directing you to the "other parking lot" so that nobody thinks the "pin-striped" car is with the Third Coast group.
