Default The Antique 928

I had to laugh…a couple days ago I was driving home from work in the GT and from behind I can hear the familiar sound of a Ferrari coming up in traffic (F12 Berlinetta). I am stopped at a set of lights so he pulls up next to me in the left turning lane and stops…he rolls down his window and yells out “ Hey I love your car, it looks Fantastic”. I know he owns several Ferrari's including a F40, F50 and several others…so it’s quite the compliment.
The Antique 928 still attracts attention…

The 928 shape is timeless and looks good from all angles and that will never change. Very few cars can claim that.

Default Sound

The one thing for me that I felt was lacking with the 928 was the sound. Having driven an old 71 911 for 25 years, the sound the 911 made was/is amazing...when I got the 928 I noticed the sound at idle of the 928 was a rumble, but running through the gears...the sound of the engine was subdued. I have CATs and resonators, but recently removed the muffler and added the RMB and now the sound is 5L-32V-HEMI Amazing!! Driving down the highway at speed you would never notice there was no muffler...but between 3000 and 5000RPM...Wow the engine howls at a very unique pitch

I now look at the 911 in the garage as a princess...(when my wife is not using it as a daily driver)

Yes. They have a habit of doing that.

The timeless looks are a double-edged sword, and IMHO this hurts the price.

After 30+ years it doesn't "look" like a 30+ year old car styled for those times and so doesn't get that 'instant' recognition of classics like Mustangs, Corvettes, Ferraris, 356's, Lambo's, Maserati's etc.

Instead, our cars continue to be politely and understatedly contemporary.

I was thinking this same thing today. They just don't seem like a classic car.

My GT, stock exh afaik, has a distinct low rumble that quickly develops an edge when provoked. Idling along in 2nd in an u/g carpark there is enough 'something' in the sound that says 'muscles'.

Doesn't stop them being noticed. I'm just back from town where one fellow went apes**t from the footpath (sidewalk) and an older woman at the gas station commented on the speed potential.

Come to think of it, the car gets good comments a few times a month.

I too thought the 928 still looked contemporary, but I'm not so sure anymore. It's not so much the styling, but the sheer size and height difference compared to modern cars. The 928 is low and tiny in comparison - so it stands out as odd. The other day I attended a cars and coffee held at a local Ferrari/Maserati dealer. The cars in the showroom were HUGE - with high noses and hoods and massive bulk. The same applies to 911's. The first time I parked my 79 next to a 996, I was shocked at how much bulkier the 996 was.

It's weird, back in 80's, it was all about downsizing. Now it's a race to add bulk and height while trying to maintain fuel economy.

When I look at new cars like the Corvette, Dodge Charger, they looks big and heavy compared to the 928. I frequently get asked about my 928, especially at the gas station.

the current fad, from sporty types to pickups, is the big flat nose. To stay abreast of the times we should attach a big sewer grate to the nose of our 928s.
