Hi chaps. Thank you for your help so far - I'm back on this project this evening and finding these electrics frustrating (although my new power steering pipes are in, alternator and starter motor all back in :-)
Part of the problem is that although I bought Roger's manual I find the wiring diagram difficult to understand and hard to find the appropriate wires in the car!
So, starting with Mrmerlins suggestion (which seems easiest) I can't even get to the wiring. Lying on my back and looking up behind the bumper, the wires come out the rear of the fog lamps then go into connectors, which then disappear into to the top of the bumper where they can't be seen nor accessed so far as I can tell. I've dropped out the numberplate lights but that still doesn't get me into this 'hidden compartment' Surely I don't need to remove the rear bumper to access and check the connections??? Btw I did check the positive terminal at the fog light using the battery as an alternative ground and still nothing so it doesn't appear to be a bad ground connection. I'll post this now incase anyone's up whilst I have a think through Alan's suggestion. Also, to add further salt to my wounds the horn seems to have also stopped working and it certainly worked a few months ago. I only had a fiddle with it because only one of the two horns has ever working in my ownership so I was looking to see which one. It would seem unlikely but could this be a related problem?

I followed your suggestion Alan and checked the spare socked up in the pod and it behaved as you suggested but made the clicking dash noise, like it was reseting the odometer so they were the right way round. Anyway, I pressed the rear fog switch, just in case, and eureka they now work?? So it feels like i've dodged the bullet but I'm not sure which bit of my fiddling solved the problem - clearly a bad connection somewhere. Anyway that's that problem solved so just the horn to tackle now for my MOT, I'll research the existing threads before starting another one if necessary. Thank you very much everyone for you help on this :-) Tim

Oh, and I've also invested in an auto electrical book off Amazon as I fear not understanding the wiring diagrams could be a long term handicap with this car!!
