On the plugs.... Remove the upper fill plugs before you loosen the drains. So if there are problems you don't have an empty gear case. The lower plugs swim in oil so tend to come out more easily. Uppers are also harder to access for leverage. Use top quality Allen drivers, inserted completely in the plug.
