Pod Removal/Bulb refresh
Getting ready to replace all the bulbs in the instrument cluster with led's and will doxit everything at the same time.
Printed out Schocki's 15 min. procedure and Dwayne's as well. Noticed that Mr. Ball indicated that he could not remove the pod per the 15 min procedure. Since I have an 87 which procedure will I be able to use?
Also, any suggestions from experienced pod removers is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Lon

Hi Lon,
Pod removal takes me 5 minutes. The first time I did it, it took an hour. The pod removal is the same (more or less) for the 928. Use Dwayne's and keep track of which bolts, screws, etc. go where. It is very simple.
The hardest part (in my opinion) is putting it back together. Good luck!

Definetly check out Ed's guide:

His LED dimmer has been great too: https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...g-to-leds.html

Scott thanks for the info. Did you have to remove the steering wheel, Dwayne's write up has him doing that. Also No Vec, I purchased Ed's dimmer a couple of months ago, glad you reminded me, I had forgotten that I even had it....
Yes, you have to remove the steering wheel, remove the turn stalk mechanism, remove some of the plastic trim pieces (do not over tighten when you reinstall).
By the way, remove the ground strap before you do all of this. Good luck!

Watching closely as I've put off my Pod refresh until I could put in LEDs too. Mine's an '84 though so I'm not sure mine will look as nice as those with later digi-dashes though.
Best wishes on your changeover & refresh Lon!!!

Mrmerlin. I deoxed my entire fuse panel, relay switches and every other connection I could get to ( head/tail lights also engine compartment connections) last month. As a result my pod lights look much brighter as well. I decided to make the led changeover as part of my preventive maintenance schedule.
I am going to replace my odo gear before it goes bad. I just turned 112000 miles and according to everything thing I read, the gear is on borrowed time.
With that being said, this will be a good time to upgrade to led's and to deox the entire instrument cluster and pod connections.
Being proactive keeps our exotic cars on the road.
Thanks for everyone's input.

Tom, I have the old school instrument panel also in my 87. I prefer it over the electronic hands down.
Because you do not have an airbag car, remove the steering wheel first! Like others have said keep track of where everything belongs. There are short and long bolts and brackets with clips that may fall out when loose. Getting it all back together was the tricky part the first time I did this job. Dwaynes write-up has a tip about some tape on the 'spacers' for the right side of the pod where the cluster attaches and rotates to the left side. It worked quite well for me.
Also, be careful with the clips on the back of the cluster. They have tabs that go inward which releases the clip and outward when installing sucks in the clip if I recall correctly.

Thanks Calgary, I will be sure and take pics of everything before removing it and label them too. I hate having 1 or 2 bolts or nuts left over. Kinda like missing socks in the dryer, you wonder where the heck they went
