Is there any way to mod the cassette holder centre console thing to a dual cup holder? I have no use for cassettes
Another thought I had about this is like one of those hospital tray type things. Nicely balanced on your lap and won't cause cold/warm crotch

Cool old method

Here is a tried and true method:
Go to a boating supply store and buy a "bar buoy". It is meant for use on boats that rock and roll without losing vertical orientation. In other words, it swivels in any direction including backward and forward and at any angle to keep the container level relative to gravitational pull. When not in use, the basket section may be disconnected(lifted out of the mounting bracket) and stored somewhere convenient or just left hanging there. The original ones (back in the early seventies) were chromed but I would paint it flat black.

I stopped using one when I gave up drinking while driving except from a large water (1 gal) jug I keep behind my seat. But they truly work well if you must drink and drive. Check it out.

How about a device like the "bar buoy" Ron mentioned and in front of the E-Brake handle close to the floor, is there room?

Paul your guys really have some nice products! Keep up the good work!

Personally, I think the best place for a cup holder is back home....in the cupboard.

Most of my driving takes place in town, and I wouldn't think of drinking anything while sitting on my relatively new seat leather.

ON the occasional long drive, I have sat bottles of diet Coke, bottled water, etc. on the rear drivers side floormat, angled so that the cap rests on the top of the console around the parking brake. Works well, and easy to get at with the left hand while driving.

Yes, I saw just such a thing made to fit on top of the casset box at the parts counter of my local Porsche dealer. It comes in a couple factory colors. I didn't get a price.

I think a good place is towards the rear of the door, under the rotating locking ****. There is a lot of flat surface there and its visually out of the way so the cabin doesn't look too cluttered up with bits. You would have to perfect a sideways reach - but think of it as a shoulder holster cup holder!

The best one I have seen on the web is this one -

http://shop.zcarcreations.com/displa...28&rP=default,

which swivels in the same way as the 'bar buoy' is described as doing.

There's also one for the central rest here -

Cheers

The problem with the cassette holder area is that you are running the risk of hitting your cup with your elbow. I'm not sure how this would be with taller people than my little self, but I don't think it would work for me.

I've seen those things that Jessa describes, and Dave provides a link for similar ones (http://www.drinkholders.com/porsche/928main.html). However, I think these all look pretty boxy, not very pleasing, and I just can't see mounting those on the top of my cassette box (which I use for all kinds of other useful thingies...

Here is my solution. This cupholder is held in place by the heavy duty plastic Velcro sold at Radio Shack, not the fuzzy soft type. It folds up and out of the way as well when down will hold heavy drinks with no problem. Just ask my kids.

If needed the entire cup holder can be pulled off so not to get in the way (it doesn't in this position by the way) and the Velcro could be removed thereby not leaving screw holes in the console.

I found this last year on one of the Porsche links, can't remember which one, might have even been Rennlist. If anybody is interested I will see if I can dig up the invoice.

GT..I'd be interested. Right now I have a similar folding unit that has a flexible strap attached to the back. Bought it at an Autozone or similar place. I use the glovebox lid to hold the strap. Works for me since I'm tall and can reach it although the upper holder on mine is 'split' to accomodate various sizes and can expand under acceleration. Part of my solution is a Nissan (I think..have to check) coffee mug. Best one I've found yet as far as leakproof...close to 100% if you get the lid screwed on right...expensive though at $35 but then again I'm not cleaning the carpets near as often. . Part of the reason I'm interested in this is that I take some long road trips and coffee access/leakage is important. I just got back from a 2600 mile, weeklong roadtrip from PA to WI.

The consensus seems to be the "Jerry Lee Lewis" cup holder, also known as "Great ***** Of Fire".

I found that the factory cupholder supplied in later VW Passat models is a perfect fit. It comes in one- or two-cup versions. Folds out of the way similar to the way some of those other folding holders work. I have it mounted on the pass side of the console. Mount is a U-shaped bracket that slides up under the lower edge of the side panel on the console. When folded, the edges are smooth with no sharp corners to catch clothes on. Cost was about $35, available at any VW dealer. I'm not near the car so I can't pop a picture. MOst who have seen it think it's a great solution. Cruise by your VW dealer and see one installed in a car, evaluate for yourself.

In Japan they have these cup holders that attach to the AC vents. SO I picked a couple up at the ¥100 shop ($1 Store). They would work great if only my center vent didn't keep falling out. I've now religated it to being my cellphone holder in my SUV. One really nice advantage of being on the vent is that during the summer the AC keeps your drink (or cell phone) really cold.

Since it didn't work in the 928, I have gone the the kind that you shove down between the door glass and the inside of the door, and then let hang on the inside of the door. It works great, but I can't find a Chocolate brown color to match the interior. Cest la vie.
