in going over the receipts for the car I just bought I found an item from 1992
" repair torque converter flex plate"

My mechanic has not checked for TBF yet. He is waiting to talk to Roger to make sure he understands the procedure. Does the above problem mean anything one way or the other ?

In 1992 the car had 18k miles on it. It currently has 56k.

He is most likely talking about the rear flex plate. The TC is at the rear of the car.

you don't say what year your car is or whether it is a 5 speed or autobox. These things all matter in answering the question as well. Put you car details in your signature, or remeber to always mention what you have.

Some of the cars had rivets on the rear flex plate which caused noise. There was a Porsche bulletin issued to drill them out and install bolts. Could be referring to that.

The New Visitor thread at top will give you lots of needed info, like using a descriptive phrase in the title line.

RE: signature, in the blue bar at top, is a tab "User CP" that would be User Control Panel. The search function is very useful too.

http://dwaynesgarage.norcal928.org/ is Dwaynes Garage. At bottom is a flex plate procedure.

Is the flex plate procedure the same for an S3 as an S4 ?

yes, the procedure is the same. Also, as I recall, the flex plate/thrust bearing issue is not as serious with the earlier cars - pre-85, since there was a factory installed clip at the shaft in the front near the flex plate. The factory discontinued it in 85 onwards, according to my WSM.

Releasing the flex plat is only one part of the procedure - the most important part is checking the end float of the crank to achieve a bench mark measurement. Also release and check the rear flex plate. Replace both bolts with new.

roger,
I conveyed this to my mechanic however he has a call in to you to get specifics and also to place an order for whatever he needs. Please give him some guidance on which plugs and wires to order. Thanks.
