Default 82 5 speed question please.. interior lights

Hi Guys, I was away for ten days and when I returned my battery was dead. It turns out that previously, the lights were staying on with all the doors and hatch closed, so I opened the hatch, and depressed the plunger and the lights went off, so I unplugged the connector behind the tool kit and thought, that should do it.

But it didn't, and this time as I slowly raided the hatch at a certain point the lights went off, and would come back on when I lowered it. Is there a mercury switch or other type that I can check?
Thanks!
Rick

No - its likely you have loose wires at the light in the hatch - pull the light to see... It will be a loose brown white wire (or a broken light fixture).

Alan, I did have an "issue" with the rear hatch lights a few years ago, causing "smoke in the cabin" I removed the light taped the wires and stuck them back in. So this morning, I pulled the wires and saw that there is damage beyond where I can see. How do I remove the Black covering with the small push pins to get at the wire??

Thanks a bunch!

disconnect the battery first then remove panels as necessary to expose the wires
You could also start at the CE panel and look for the harness that runs along the floor alongside the passenger seat,
this will probably have the melted wires.

What you will also be looking for are melted light housings,.
NOTE these should all be replaced, and LED bulbs fitted ,
Also heat shrink the ends of all of the wire leads

Thanks Stan, yes the hatch light assembly has been removed when this happened a few years back. All of the others are perfect.
Thanks!
