Default Random 928 Part Identification Thread

Being new to 928s, every now and then, I'll find or see something on my 928 and wonder "What the heck is this?"

Sometimes- using WSMs, PET, Wiring Diagrams, google, a search based on a known nearby part, thru function, searching the forum- or just luck when reading about something else- I can often identify it.

Of course, there other times- especially with radio wiring or when something (like hatch release) has been disabled by a PO- I can label it as "something a PO must have done."

And then, there's moments like this:

Looking around my engine compartment, I found this receptacle on top of coolant expansion tank (pictured). PET tells me it is a tank gauge switch for cooling water. However, when I plug in the mysterious plug dangling nearby (also pictured)- which fits perfectly but was not plugged in- my windshield wipers turn on and won't stop. Wire has been and remains disconnected.

So... What is this receptacle? What is this plug for? Or... How can I find out? (DMM at the ready!)

On top of the reservoir is the connection for the fluid level warning. Does not measure a temp, just a level. If I remember correctly that Red/Blue is the color that is part of that connector to the coolant level warning sensor. I can't think of a reason that your windshield wipers would turn on. Do they work normally otherwise ?

Cool! So I got that part right...

As for the wire, I'll try battery shut off, re-attach and test as that may be one reason for the funky behavior. (As I was just looking under the hood at the time, I'm pretty sure everything was live at the time.) Will follow-up soon...

Other than that though, yes wipers working fine...

that little connector will benefit from some deoxit,
this part usually corrodes and since its out of sight you wont see it has a failed connection

Well... same result after cutting off battery, deOxItizing, re-connecting and re-enabling battery: start car and front wipers turn into Energizer Bunny. So... undid that little connection right quick!

And so this particular mystery continues...

Boy, that is an odd one.
I've looked at the WD for your MY and the coordinate references are different than what I know relative to the S4 WD's. I see a common ground point with the washer pump at the CE console that was obvious, but for I don't understand the coordinate references I can't help further. It does sound like a ground issue though. You could try this - all ground wires are Brown or a mix of Brown/and another color - if you can pull the Red/Blue connector out and then attach it to the reservoir connector and fix a wire to the other reservoir connector and then to a body ground you can then see if your wiper matter disappears - if it does, then you know there is a ground contamination down the line. At the same time while having these wires so affixed, turn your ignition key on to the point where all the warning lights illuminate - if your coolant level warning light illuminates then you know the issue is that of a contaminated ground.
