Default Spare Tire

Hi, there. Have a question for the group on your collapsible spare tire, if you have them. If you do and you have an original, that rubber may be over 30 years old. Do you replace your spare tire? Do you get a newer model somewhere? Or do you on just hope you never have to use it?

Just interested in your thoughts!

Get a AAA Gold card. Up to three 100-mile flatbed/tows for under $80 a year. Cheaper than buying a new spare and a lot less hassle than trying to change a tire on the side of a busy road in the middle of a heavy rainstorm. Value: Priceless! No scrapped knuckles, strained back and ruined clothes trying to stuff your disabled full-size wheel & tire into the back of the already loaded hatch while on a road trip.

The AAA thing doesn`t work for me living out in the desert. 100 miles wont get me anywhere. I removed my space saver spare and made that area into a tool/parts storage bin. I used a matching full size rim with a new tire and mounted it under the hatch ala early Shelby Mustang look. Yes it does take up luggage space, but I travel light and can`t ride the luggage home.

Interesting alternative, how do you tie it down ?

Right now I `m using two 1in wide rachet straps criss-crossed and attached at each corner to the existed tie down hooks in floor. I am working on having a leather worker make me a nice leather buckle style hold down. `Im using a nice polished 16in Manhole style original wheel with a 225/45/16 tire. Fits all four corners.

Original spare, inspected at irregular intervals ("Yep, it's still there") and I assume it will work if needed. I only tested that theory once, a few years ago, and it worked fine. Rubber compounds vary, my presumption is that they chose something designed to favor long shelf life over treadwear and grip.

And if my theory is no good then there is always AAA-plus/gold/premiere or whatever they call it where we live. But in the meantime it is one more available option. And options is good.
