Howdy folks,

Looks like the cat is out of the bag. Thanks for the post Wally, I really appreciate it. First, I'd like to thank everyone who supported me financially and morally, I still can't describe how that makes me feel, it is overwhelming. I couldn't have done it without your support. Thank you. Well, I am off the World Rowing Championships once again. I won't be defending my title as a singles rower this year there are enough rowers to have our event as a double. So, rather than row against my teammate as I did last year, I will be rowing with her. We have both been training hard and we had a great row out in San Diego in the Bay2Bay as I posted not too long ago. I am confidant that we will do very well. I've also grown accustomed to the color gold so you can be sure I'll be putting forth my greatest effort this year.

This years championships are being held in Milan, Italy. It's a month earlier this year, last year it was in September. We are attending a training camp here in Philly starting this Monday. Our twice daily beatings will end when we fly out to Milan on August 20th. This year it looks like they may have heats before the finals for all the divisions. The heats will be on Friday the 29th and the finals will be in the afternoon on Saturday the 30th. The wife and I are taking a few extra days to see some of Italy as there is no time to do that while your preparing for your race. Everything is quite hectic until the very end.
....
Well, thanks for the bandwidth and I'll talk to you soon. Please feel free to drop me a line if you have any questions or just want to know something or even give a little moral support. I'd love to hear from you. My address is:

sbrown928@comcast.net

Once the site is up, there will be some great stuff on there. My wife, Sandy has created a biography about me that many people have enjoyed plus there is a little more history for you to check out. Thanks also to Wally for his support and guidance. You are an invaluable resource Wally, thanks.

Hi Jay (and all..!!

Here is a note Scott asked me to post in reply to all the Rennlisters for their support.. I'll be adding it to his web page and sending it to the Rennlist 928 e-mail list in a bit....

Anyway - thanks from Scott..!!!!

Scott's note:

Dear Rennlist Friends,

Hello everyone! I have had quite a year! Most significantly, thanks to all of your support, I was able to raise enough money to compete in the FISA World Rowing Championships in Spain last September. And of course, the event was not without its drama. The weather caused problems - heavy rain and strong winds. I was nervous at the start due to rough water, but told myself to not flip the boat and just finish the race. After all of the wait to get here, the last thing I wanted to do was screw up. I started to row, and was so pumped up that I went for it. When I crossed the finish line three boat lengths ahead of the competition I still didn’t believe that I had won. I had become the first ever fixed-seat rowing World Champion! In true rowing fashion, once you win, you row right up to the podium to receive your medal. I was in a fog – and to this day, still cannot express in words what it meant to be there when they hoisted the American flag and played the National Anthem in my honor. And now, I have the unique opportunity to do what only a select few get to do – defend my title. This year, the FISA World Rowing Championships will be held in Milan, Italy from August 24th through August 31st. I have once again been named to the USRowing Adaptive National Team. In addition, because of all of my wife Sandy’s hard work and support in Spain last year, she has been named by USRowing to be the US Adaptive Team Coordinator this year!

In early June, I once again competed in the 20-mile Bay-to-Bay race in San Diego with Angela Madsen, another USRowing Adaptive team member and silver medalist in Spain last year. We were the only entrants with disabilities and therefore had to compete in the “open doubles” division with able-bodied rowers. This year, we finished in second place fifteen minutes faster than last year, and beat an able bodied team!

If that isn’t enough to tell you about, I was selected to receive the Philadelphia Rowing Society’s most prestigious award – the Heidere Award. This is given to recognize the individual from the Philadelphia area who has made the most significant contribution to the sport of rowing in the past year. By competing in the first-ever adaptive races and bringing home a gold medal, the Philadelphia Rowing Society unanimously decided to acknowledge me for what I have done for the sport of adaptive rowing. I was truly honored and humbled by my inclusion in this select group of recipients.

Milan holds tremendous significance this year. This is the year that the bid is made to the International Paralympics Committee to petition for a sanctioned rowing event in 2008. The Committee needs to see international competition for two years and also that progress has been made in promotion of the sport. This year would be the second year of competition, and there is hope to add additional events and have more countries entering boats, fulfilling both requirements.

So, once again, I am asking for your help. I am inviting my friends and supporters from Rennlist to assist me in any way, no matter how small. I am extremely excited about Milan, and the opportunity to defend my title. Sandy is eager to work with the team as their coordinator. I hope that you will support me once again by making a donation for me to compete in the World Rowing Championships. If you would like to make a donation, checks can be made out directly to me. Or, if you would like your contribution to be to tax deductible, (PRPD is a 501c-3 non profit corporation) checks can be made out to:

Philadelphia Rowing Program for the Disabled
Please place “Milan Account, Scott Brown” in the memo box of your check. Please mail checks to my address: 135 Hansen Terrace Collingdale, PA 19023.

I would like to again thank those of you that have supported me in the past. I look forward to once again making you proud. Without your support, I would be unable to live out this dream.

Thank You,
Scott Brown
