First thing I did when I bought mine (last May) was take it on a 50 mile road trip to get acquainted with the car.

Then I started reading as much as I could about who has done what to their 928.

There are some amazing vehicles on this site. It is easy to get inspired with upgrades.

My first upgrade was S4 brakes + Bilstein shocks. Currently am building a hybrid.

Fuel lines, then clean and check all grounds. Replace power steering lines, automatic transmission cooler lines (if an auto) and check all fluid levels. Also check the oil cooler lines if you have any.

Then drive it without the risk of fire or expensive damage

These are the right answers regardless of MY.

There are LOTS of things in the car that will wear out before the body starts to rust and these are the parts to worry about. Bushings, grease, lube (like seat rail, window track and roof gear lube) all become like glue after 20+ years. The suspension has lots of bushings that will not have aged well. These are all things that have to be checked (at least) and redone if they haven't been.

Certain years have different issues that are specific to them, autos have different issues than 5-speeds. Those will be more specific to your year and type of car.

Unless you are well versed in 928 mechanics, I would take it to an experienced 928 guy and have a thorough inspection done.

That way you will have a second set of eyes looking for the things that need to be done now and those things that can wait.

Then make a list of the nice to do items and prioritize by how deep your wallet is and how much time you have.

The $ you spend on the inspection will be one of the best first investments you can make.

But as always, ask a 2nd opinion on high $ or difficult to remove items that someone else recommends replacing. This site is invaluable for that purpose.

Thrust bearing end play check. I would have done it before buying the car.

Does the thrust bearing need to be replaced regularly or just checked?

Inspection by a 928 expert, which will require fuel lines if they have not been done. It's very easy to spend $5k+ on miscellaneous things on these cars, but an expert will help you prioritise.

The one thing that has been missed (so far), is becoming a Rennlist member

Get peace of mind by having your car thoroughly gone over, then enjoy!

I would read the NEW Visitor FAQ first, then check fuel lines, thrust bearing and timing belt/water pump.

Fuel lines will keep your car from becoming an large BBQ, the thrust bearing will tell you if you need a new motor or destroying your current motor and the TB/WB will keep you from needing a new motor.
