Default Noob to Porsche

Hey guys, I've never owned a Porsche, but back in 86 my friend's dad had a 928S. I never have forgotten that car...we took it out once, fortunately nothing happened to it or us. But it was a car that just stuck with me. I've had several old school muscle cars and a few late model American muscle cars...I've had an AMG benz, an M3 BMW and currently I drive an 02 E430 which runs and drives good for what it is. Of the cars I've had, the German cars are always my favorites.

So long story short, I'm looking to expand my horizons and get into a Porsche. I'm looking for a weekend car that will scratch my fast car itch and turn heads. I'm pretty handy with a wrench and I have the room and the tools to do most anything to a car that a non-pro mechanic can do. So I'm sure it's been asked here many times, but if I go with a 928, what's the best year? I guess I should clarify that I'm looking for the least issues possible. I was assuming that the later models would be better in this regard, but I'd rather ask the guys that know them.

I'm also considering a 911 in the 95-98 year range...but I just LOVE the look of the 928's. Thanks in advance for any and all input.

You'll need to follow your heart here; there weren't any bad 928s built. AFAIK, they have a dedicated following in every model year. One thing that might help you decide is which body style you fell in love with? After '86 the car changed visually in many ways. I happen to prefer the 85-86 928S3 because I like that body style and it was the pinnacle of development on that body. If you're attracted to speed you'd want to consider the S4, but if you like the iconic lines of the 928 I wouldn't go past '86.

PS: I also practice what I preach I love the lines of the 1985 944, but I own an 89. Why? Because it's a track car and I want speed over looks. But I own an 85 928 because it gives me the looks I like and a very large amount of speed on the street.

In looking at styling, I like the 86 the most, the small tail vs a wing, the sharp lines of the leading edge of the car...it just looks like a supercar to me. I remember it being a fast car back then. But I also thought my little 85 Dodge Charger Shelby going 0-60 in 6 flat was fast. I think I need to look at and drive one. Looks are a big deal, but it's got to be fast.

I don't drive at high speeds a lot, but today I had a stretch with no traffic and it's nice to blip the pedal in my E430 and be at 120 in just a few seconds (from 80).

I should try to find some performance vs year comparisons to save some time.

Don't get me wrong, the S3 is still a fast car, the S4 a bit faster. The final S4 version had a larger displacement engine in it, initially they only had a better breathing intake plenum. 80 to 120 in a few seconds is normal for an S3 and honestly, if you want truly stupid fast you can always supercharge one

I've had mine on the track several times and though it won't keep up with contemporary Porsches it does fine against GTs of its era.
