Default cam cover seepage

I am buying a car that has some oil around the intake clamps. The current owner said his mechanic advised against replacing the gasket on the cam covers as something could go wrong due to an issue with the 4 cam engines. Any thoughts on this ?

Bs! Cam cover gaskets can be replaced without a problem.

As Aryan said total BS and stay well clear of that mechanic.

If the car is an 85 or early 86 the cam cover bolts are hex head with brass standoffs they screw into. Sometimes troublesome to remove and the bolts and standoffs no longer available new. Very easy to upgrade each troublesome bolt with the later allen headed bolts and associated hardware. All gaskets are available.

IIRC, I remember reading threads that indicated that the bolts could get seized in the standoffs such that when you attempted to turn out the bolts they would snap and if that happened on the lower front corner bolts you were kinda screwed? (I only do '87+ so I don't claim to know nothin' about the S3 motors...)

In any case, OP: do you refer to the cam covers or the intake clamps? Two different things...

Why would there be oil seeping from the intake clamps ?

Assuming that the terms in use mean the same thing to both of us, oil leakage from the cam covers does not cause leakage from the clamps for the intake runners nor does the reverse.

The cause is 30-year old rubber.

If you search for threads on S3 cam cover removal you can find all the opinions on the issue I mention above.

I see you edited your original post to ask a better question. The answer is that 928s ingest motor oil through the crank case breather system. It's more-or-less a bigger problem from each generation to the next; GTSs are the worst in terms of oil ingestion old 16v 928 far, far less.
