Default need some advice…………84 euro vs 91 s4

i have found both of these cars, i haven't driven either but from what i can tell from many pics they seem to be very nice cars.

i owned an 86.5 5 speed and liked it a lot, thats my only experience with 928's, i am a 911 turbo guy.

84 is a euro, 5 speed, recent paint, dark green very nice. has 65k miles and tb/wp done about 8k miles ago, seems like a very straight and nice car. $6500

91 is a s speed, white original paint and very nice shape. recent service within 2k miles ago. has 103k miles on it. $20k

i am not a mechanic, i do not want something i have to tinker with on a daily basis, this is a weekend car and maybe a short weekend getaway car for, may put 2500 miles a year on it if that, probably less since i have several other vehicles.

thoughts and opinions needed, i do like performance, i have been known to get the hp bug before so putting a turbo kit or SC on it will probably happen if i fall in love with it like i did my 86.5

thanks

The 91 with a 5 speed is a GT , IMHO the best 928 that was make . However maintenance is key . You need to get a proper inspection , from a knowable 928 mechanic

As you undoubtedly know from your previous 86.5, these are 20-30 year old cars you are looking at, and there will be things that need attention now and in the future. I'm not sure I'd recommend any 928, even my own well-maintained and cared-for example, as a car that you can buy as a turn-key weekend car with no current or future attention needed beyond washing and filling with fuel.

So the standard advice applies: Buy the nicest, best-maintained example you can find and afford. There's a basic $5k budget needed for all the rubber bits unless they have been replaced in the last five years. That's parts and pieces, labor is additional. Cosmetic and other deferred maintenance costs are additional.

Spend well on a complete pre-purchse inspection by someone who knows the 928 specifically. Manage your expectations. If all else was equal and PPI's comparable, I'd buy the '91 GT over the '84 Euro without a look back. If the budget is an issue, maybe the Euro but only if you can identify a mechanic willing and able to work on it for you. The Euro will present interesting issues that require knowledge not common in most places. Especially if it isn't driven regularly. There's a wildcard factor in how it was federalized at import, and how many non-standard fixes have been applied in the intervening years. Not saying it's automatically a bad car, just that there are more opportunities for irregularities. Problems can multiply in scope and cost if you are at the mercy of someone else's knowledge and wrenches.

Post pics and more info on the examples you are considering. Perhaps others here know the cars already, and can share their observations. It's a pretty supportive group.

All S4 5-Speeds from 1990 are GT's. The earlier ones had more aggressive final drive gears. There are options that are more common on the GT's, like limited-slip. Suspension options were more common on GT's, although you can retrofit anything you like. And at that age and mileage, it's due for some suspension work if it hasn't already been done. The GT's have 10 more rated horsepower, due to slightly different cams and a revised upper rev limit. There's undoubtedly more detailed stuff. The Ower's Manual lists it as S4/GT, title will say S4. 5-Speed is a GT.

Its worth noting that 84 has the earlier style syncros in the gearbox and may have a crunchy gearbox changing into 2nd. If its definitely a Euro, it does have the excellent 310hp 16V engine. The 85 onwards have more durable syncros.

If you're not doing your own work, then maintenance-wise they're pretty similar, as both as twin-distributor LH injection with MAF etc.. The GT will probably come out ahead on sales value ($20k for a 91 GT is a pretty good price).

Of those two cars, I personally would pick the 91 GT every time as I prefer the S4-onwards body style. Ultimately it comes down to your own preference for early vs. late body styles, colour and price.
