I am in the throws of replacing my brake pads and when I pulled of the rears the "E" brake shoes just fell out into my hand.
Totally perished! How common is this? Also I'm considering replacing my front rotor's. Drilled or slotted? Any suggestions?

Maybe one (or more) of the springs that hold everything together broke.

 

what usually happens to the e brake shoes is that the E brake gets left on and the shoes wear down.

The other issue is that the shoe hook springs, dont get installed properly to the hub carrier.

Then the hook spring pops out after the rotor is installed,
the loose spring then starts damaging all of the other parts inside the rotor.

To verify the spring is installed correctly,
use a drop light and mirror to inspect the rear side of the hub carrier ,

you will see a rib in the opening the hook must grab the rib.

NOTE a Phillips screwdriver placed inside the spring works well to set the spring.

Great, thanks to you both. I have always has small rubbing noise coming from back there. I repacked the CV's everything I could think of. Now I think this was the issue.
Always nice to take something apart for a reason
