The numbers weren't enough to be a "gross polluter", but I'm seriously tired of being stressed out every two years. Car runs pretty well now with new vac lines & such but it's the original 33 year old cat w likely >200k miles. I'm sure it's been well past it's prime for many years.
928 Int'l has Porsche cats for the OBs at $395! So got one of those on the way. It kinda blows since that cash was meant to help buy new springs and front end items and get my Boges installed. Sigh. Sorry needed to vent a bit!

I was just in that same situation a couple months ago. The new cat cleaned the car up nicely, so I'm sure it will do the same for you as long as everything else is sorted!

At that price I don't understand how Mark hasn't sold out of these. The last quote I got for an S4+ factory cat was $2277....

I know your pain. I failed my smog test in the S4 earlier this month, turned out to be a bad MAF (along with a few minor visual issues). Got a rebuild MAF from Louie (and fixed a couple of hose connections) and passed.

Now you've got another 200K stress-free miles!

This was EXACTLY what I was thinking!! I really just called on a whim thinking the poor dear was gonna be registered non-op until I could donate enough plasma to earn the $2K it was gonna set me back. $395 is absolutely a screaming deal. They bought a bolus of 50 units from a warehouse someplace--if you've got an early car and need a cat NOW is a great time to snag one.

My S4 failed smog due to failing MAF- Nox was high on both speed.
Original BMW or Porsche cats are very high quality and only goes bad if car was neglected where oil and everything else was dumped down the honeycomb clogging it. My previous 635 had 240k miles on original cat and it passed below average.
Old German cats are worth @$300 on Ebay as scrap.

At least you got one while they are still cheap, you will have many more trouble free miles out of your new cat and your old one is worth some serious $$$ to a metal recycler as scrap as said above.
At least your car didn't get a gross polluter title tagged onto it as that would be a pain to deal with in cities with very strict emissions laws.

If you post the numbers from the failed test sometimes we guess what is wrong more accurately. Sending my injectors out for cleaning and putting in new seals did the trick for my 85 Euro, still running cheap after market cat, but planning on upgrading eventually.
