Diesel fuel is one of the best degreasers there is. Spray bottle of diesel, small bristled brush. That's what i used for my block and it looks mint now. Although technically the mechanism by which it works isn't really degreasing, it's a light hydrocarbon dissolving heavier ones, and if the grease/buildup is dissolved into the liquid diesel, it can be rinsed off with brake clean or hit with a detergent (Sunlight) and rinsed off.

Dry ice blasting is quite possibly the best method of cleaning or stripping there is. No masking/protection of places you don't want media to go, no particulate to cause health problems. I think the main thing is it's cost prohibitive. I know for alot of restoration guys the sky is the limit, and heck sometimes they spend money excessively just because of an imaginary pissing contest, me, i don't like to spend money unecessarily. Doesn't mean i'm cheap, i'm just not a chump.
