Could I do something like this on reinstall?

I would think you could support the engine from above and remove the entire crossmember from below. Might be a good time to look at the motor mounts.
(Disclaimer: I haven't actually tried this [yet] on a 928, but it does work on a 944. Your mileage may vary........)

Un-doing bolts:

Cut a screwdriver slot in the ends of bolts using a Dremel with a 1mm thick cutting wheel.

After that: all is needed is a screwdriver and ring spanner. No need for astonishingly bent/twisted reverse left thingy spanners made of Unobtanium.

Just a screwdriver and ring spanner.

Keep it simple.

So using a dremmel to cut grooves on the tops of bolts you cant even see is easier than using an allen key or a flex head ratchet with a 17mm socket?

Ok.

Sean,
I think UpFixenDerPorsche means from below. Make the slot on the bottom side of the bolt so that you can counter hold it from below while you use a wrench to turn the nut. But from my recollection the end of the bolt is flush with the nut, so it would be difficult to do.

The bolt heads are of course accessible when you pull x-member down, or even tip it back a bit, so he may have had the re-install in mind and did mean to cut slot in bolt heads? But no room for even short driver up there do I may be wrong, and if it is intended as cutting slots in shaft ends then on a RHD car I didn't find any of the 4 bolts where an offset wrench could get onto the heads!

I am totally confused by what you just said.
UpFixenDerPorsche wants to cut a slot at the bottom of the bolt shaft. The part that you can see through the nut. This way you can counter hold the bolt when you take the nut off without dealing with the bolt head from the top of the cross member.
Hope that makes sense.

Yep, or a flat head bit, just hold it and wedge it between the cross member and the side of the bolt. When the bolt tries to turn it bites into the flat head bit allowing you to loosen the nuts. Just like Sean said above with the Allen Key

I am kicking myself here for huge misunderstanding!

What a clever idea now that I get it.

I fit a standard thin-wall socket on the bolt head from the top. I hold it with a standard 3/8 "flex handle", the little breaker bar that comes in some socket sets, as the handle. There's enough angle available to get the handle slightly lower than horizontal. I put the handle up against the cross member and use the small impact gun to loosen the nuts from the bottom. Torque wrench to tighten.
