Default Sticky Starter Solenoid Repair

Guys,

When warmed up, my starting is flawless. When, for example, sitting overnight it spins - grinds a bit and doesn't 'catch' - it always does on the second try.

I've downloaded some Bosch docs on the innards of the unit, but they are on my laptop which has just had a logic board failure.

Can anyone instruct on the dissection and repair of this issue.

Thanks in Advance,
Craig

With as cheap as reman starters are, why go through all the trouble like that?

True.
I'd have to get under and remove/reinstall anyway. My motor is strong, I just think the mechanism to move the gear is soiled. A clean up in my case is probably all that is needed. The starter is a rebuilt unit and only 2 years old.

Ouch, are you sure you are getting enough amps to the starter? Harness in good shape?

Power harness is in great shape. I fabricated my own. Re-did the looms too. Actually the yellow solenoid cable had a 'worn' appearance at the 14 pin. Cleaned and treated the area yesterday when working on car, and I just started it up from last night and worked like a charm. Maybe the yellow's amperage was a little shy. Will monitor. Thanks Sean.

I think you called it on the money Sean.
My 14 pin pins and holes were a little 'white/green' - the weak link in my fab. A little filing and Deoxit 100 and she starts with what feels like barely exerting the key now.
Very happy with this.

Good to hear, it's amazing what a little corrosion can do to our electrics.

Yes Bertrand, Deoxit really stands up. Perfect for the 928.

Results are in on Deoxit. Headed to Walmart now for a couple of gallons. Will buy beer too just to ensure proper outcome.

More seriously, I have no chronic electrical gremlins but it certainly sounds like there is only upside with an application.

You don't need a gremlin to notice a difference with this stuff.
Apply to every single ground point, your jump post, the 14 pin, front and back of the CE (remove fuses and relays) at all contact points. These are easy gets.
Everything will be more 'crisp'.

I'm in. Walmart did not have Deoxit as their website touted so I picked up a can at RadioShack. Got most of bottom row of relays done. I also picked up a Fiberglass pen to brush/polish up the tabs on relays and fuses. It's tedious work but some of the tabs are very tarnished.

Will complete as time permits this week.
