Anyone near Sacramento w/ Ken's 32v bumpstick?
I am nearing the time to time my new cam gears on my S4. Does anyone in the vicinity (or elsewhere) have one to loan? Also, I would not turn down help either and in return provide some lift time and
Thanks!
Thanks!

Don--
If you still have the front of the motor apart, you are looking for the 32VR tool for setting the cam timing. The Bumpstick is a crank bolt wrench with a handle that allows you to turn the crank from above with the fan shroud still in place. Guessing the fans are still out of your car, so no need for that wrench.
I drove past ypour house last Tuesday with that tool in the car. I was on I-5 north a little after noon. Did you see me? If I'd known you needed the tool I would have dropped it off on my way through. It's at the new home in Oregon now, with the car. I'm back in Socal at this point.
Meanwhile, anybody close to Don with a 32VR to loan?

Dr Bob, when are you going back up to Bend? I read you were going to your new house last week... I was just up there, passing through. Stayed in Bend Monday night. I had already passed on the 5 Monday, I have yet to see one 928 on my drives up north. I am going up again next Monday June 23rd and staying the night in Bend.
I appreciate any help, let me know. It would be fun to meet you and see your place. I will be going up through that area quite a bit this summer.
And you are right, I need the 32VR tool, sloppy searching by me.

Next trip up is scheduled for the end of next week I think, this time in the Honda Pilot though. I've also never seen any other 928's on my several trips up there. Word is that there are others in the area, so there's hope. My presence there will be hit-and-miss for a while as I juggle a few other projects in other parts of the country with the house project in Bend. Let me know by PM when you will be passing through Bend and hopefully we can coordinate a visit. Last week there was about perfect, with high 70's days and high 40's overnight.

Richard, sent you a pm. Bend is such a great place to live, so much to do and beautiful with all the mountains and rivers. You are a lucky man to live in such a place- quite different from So Cal! I will let you know when I am travelling through and hopefully we can meet up.

Hi Guys,
i'll be driving into Bend on Tuesday the 24th. I'm driving my 87S4 over and will probably be staying at the Riverhouse. There is an Austin Healey Convention in town that week and I'll be doing a car care tech session for them on the 25th. I'm the Portland Griot's Dealer. Let me know if you'd like to get together for a beer at lunch or something. PM works or you can reach me at the store 503-548-6334

Will just miss you both. Plus it's somewhat unlikely that mrs dr bob would support a car playday in the middle of a house move or even within a week or two after that.
Would love to attend the AH gathering though. I've never owned one but my tools have touched many. Mostly when they were still at a failrly young age. Mostly Spridgets but a few 3k's. Dated a woman way back when whose dad had sent her off to college with his mkIV, which promptly smoked a dash wiring harness when she arrived. Would have been a lot cheaper to just fix the wiring, but not as much fun.

"which promptly smoked", not 'who' or 'who was' promptly smoked.
British car wiring insulation wasn't quite the crack cocaine of the time. Makes you gag, really. By the time I was done, the dash wiring was the most reliable part of the car. Local SoCal company had all the various wire colors and sizes, but min 50ft lengths. Insulation was a lot more stout than the original stuff too. Fun times!

Since Richard was kind enough to loan me the tool, we can let this thread wander.
Your story of "smoking" reminds me of a 67 Westfalia Camper I had a time ago. I had replace both front window seals (split window, they were leaking a little) and was dorking around in the vicinity of the front wiring.
Well next day I was driving to work and smoke started pouring out from the dash. I immediately smelled insulation, and pulled over and pulled the negative cable, which I had conveniently left somewhat loose- hey it's a Vdub right? Fried the headlamp circuit. Even for an electrical novice like my self that electrical system was simple.
A few days later it rained harder than it ever had that year, and by the time I got to work my little leak had water pouring into my lap. So much for my "fix"!
Still love that old bus though. Should never have parted with it.

My vdub bus adventures started with a well-worn '63 that was --almost-- big enough to hold my race bike. Fairings off, the front wheel was between the front seats as it rode betwen races. Big enough to carry some spares, a tent and some simple gear. Very slow. I changed it to 1600 and 12 Volts so I could have brighter candles while driving at night, plus a "real" radio. I was living at the beach at the time, and the rust devils finally ventilated the roof for about 3 inches above the rain gutters all the way around. I think I finally traded it for a TV or something, and moved to a pickup and trailer to haul my new sports racer to SCCA events. Almost as fast, certainly more fun, and a whole lot safer for the driver.
Ahhh, the good old days!...
