Default Automotive Diagnostics

Has anyone ever thought about adding this to their tool box?

I was actually thinking about something like that a few months ago. If it would be workable with the electronics of our cars or compatible (would / does that even apply) with them, I don't know. I would be interested if I thought that I could apply it towards a better running 928 or at least if it helped me do more of the items that we take our cars to the pros to do.

For that kind of money, you can have this and don't need the PC:: http://www.fluke.com/products/home.a...GID=6&PID=8221

It's about $1100 and can read up to 600V directly without attenuation.
With the software, you can capture screen shots and analyze data.
It's battery operated so you can do dynamic testing such as injector pulsing under load.

Probably one of the best features is the logging function where it will monitor a circuit for extended periods of time (up to days). This was very helpful in finding a parasitic current draw in my dome light circuit.

I've used one for 5 years and have been very happy with the unit.

Scott

Well, Scopes and Meters can't tell a Yugo from a Porsche. Identifying the what you want to test and the parameters of the item being tested are really the only factor.

Many of the sensors and Switches on our 928s are now used thou out the automotive industry, i.e. ABS, Speed sensors, MAF, AFR, Injectors, etc. We are lucky, as Porsche has seen to it that both Oscilloscope wave forms and Sensor values are stated in the Porsche Workshop Manual for comparison.

You think you have a low-end hesitation problem.

Lets look at how the injectors are working (Same as many other OEM injectors)?

Injector

Hum, lets take a look at the MAF (hot wire) and see if thats working right (Same as other OEM MAF or AFR)?

MAF (Hot Wire)

Hows the O2 sensor working (Same as other OEM O2 sensors)?

O2

Fruit for thought!

I was thinking about getting the Diagnostic Dice. Simple, intuitive interface, economical and works with any make and model.

Scott, yes the ScopeMeter® 120 Series is a nice unit. I looked into it, but I wanted to have the freedom to expand without paying big name dollars.

In order to do what the PICO unit does I was going to have to buy a ton of extra Test Leads, Probes and Clips . Than on top of that I want a Scope that I could use for other things that required more that the 20-40 MHz limitations of the Fluke.

I also wanted to be able to see all the reading from a 14-15 inch laptop screen on the fly rather than the 102 mm monochrome LCD.

I'm sure our purpose of use is quite different, for a dedicated shop tool that could fall off a fender at any time, the ScopeMeter® 120 Series is a good choice IMO!

We might need an additional die just for the 928 - one that says "relay" on five sides, and "something else" on one side.
