Default Torque Tube replacement

I was wondering when the torque tube should be replaced as a preventive measure?

I understand there is a circular for replacement every 75000 miles, I don't know if this is correct.

My 82 5 speed with 88K has a new engine, clutch and new gear box but the TT was not rebuilt. It doesn't seem to make any noise but while I have it up in the air repairing a crack in the exhaust, I was thinking of replacing the front shocks and the TT.

Those are about the only parts not touched so far.

Thanks

I wouldn't replace it until it starts making some noise, it's not exactly an easy job.

Are you going to replace it, or get it rebuilt? I am drooling over Constantine's super bearings.

If I actually pull the trigger, it will be a rebuilt unit.

I will probably wait until I actually get some noise.

Who knows, this TT may last another 80K.

Thanks

My 81 has 128K on the original torque tube bearings and is still quiet. I don't think you will have any problems any time soon.

Somebody here once had a famous tag line...Big Dave IIRC, if it ain't broke, fix it until it is!!!

Fixing a TT before it requires it is like waking a sleeping baby! ;-P

I just did mine with Constantine's Superbearings past Sunday. My car has been on the lift for a complete seal job and fuel line replacements. The engine is already out so I asked my mechanic to take out the torque tube. I was about to ship the torque tube to Constantine when the great Bill Ball offered to do the rebuild with me in my garage. My TT was still good, I supposed. But I figure, since I have read so many cars already had TT rebuilds as their sales ads describe, I might as well just do the ultimate fix now to save on future labor. I read Constantine's step-by-step instructions that came with the bearings and figured that I might be able to tackle it all by myself. So there I went! I emailed Bill to ask him to make other plans on Sunday as he probably had better things to do than hugging a big TT with me.
I removed the driveshaft, bearings and the vibration damper by pounding them out. The damper and the OEM bearings are jokes. As I was pounding the bearing out, the damper fell apart inside the TT. I would not be surprised that a seemingly intact TT would all of a sudden become useless when the damper disintegrates with road vibrations. The OEM bearings are junks compared to Constantine's. I am SO HAPPY that I did the rebuild prophylactically. I also bought the SuperClamp too. In my not so humble opinion, the Superbearings upgrade is a MUST and I believe that, judging from the look and feel of the parts, it is a permanent fix. I agree that one can wait until the TT fails before doing the job. But in the case that your engine or TT is already out of the car, calling Constantine will save you money and headache in the future.

I too did the full Monty with Constantine's products. I had him ship me a rebuilt one to save time. So glad I went with his stuff!

If I had to do it again, I would just get a rebuilt one from Constantine. I spent way too much time trying to rebuild it on my own.

Also, have you replaced your pilot bearing lately? That was a source of vibration as mine eventually went bad...

+928 for Constantine-have 3 super bearings, 1 clamp and also replace the tranny mounts.

No vibration or noises-very smooth.
