AC Voodoo.....
I guess that it is hot in the United States right now; look at all the posts about AC problems!
I usually turn my AC on for the first 2 miles or so that I drive, in order to help the engine warm up and and to lubricate the compressor. I don't typically drive around with the AC on however, the windows down is enough for me.
Recently, my '85 started doing something weird. When I start it up, after about 10 seconds or so, the fan comes on to the highest setting for 5 seconds. It does this almost as if it is on a program- I've timed it with the "one thousand one, one thousand two....." method a couple of times, and it is almost exactly 5 seconds. Weird.
I'm certain that the control head is going bad. Does anyone know of a rebuild service that does a good job?

I dont have a write up but ive pulled the control head and taken it all apart before No big deal at all. You will find that many of the contacts will be "gooped" with dirt..fuzz..what ever. The plastic is obviously old and brittle so becareful not to break to many of the plastic tab that help hold it all together. Dont worry, no springs or ball bearings are going to fly anywhere when you crack it open.

I got a rebuilt AC head from Jim at 928 Intl. Of course it was ruined on the trip to Florida, and I gave it back. He had it re-built again and sent it back to me no charge. I have not installed it until I locate the source of the original current draw. The price was reasonable and considerably less than new; and the warranty was honored.

I saw this today during my morning coffee and ebay.
Ebay add for A/C control head
If you are quick, you might be able to pick this one up. Its all most as good as a rebuilt unit and you can save some cash for other projects.

Hi SilverSfr,
That guy has numerous complaints against him. Search the archives. You can get a 134a retrofit kit for about $30. How he figures $126 minimum is worthwhile for his kit is beyond me.
Normy,
I would go with Randy's call on magic blower syndrome. What convinces you that the head control unit is faulty?
