Default 1979 heater box vacuum valve NLA options

My recirc valve was inop causing the AC to constantly pull in outside air.

The valve is apparently NLA and the replacement I got (valve on left) mounts using four tabs versus the old valves 3 posts which will result in me making modifications to the mixing box mount point or cutting off the tabs and running a strap over the valve to hold it in place.

Second issue is that when I was attempting to remove the old valve the post that attaches the valve rod to the flap door snapped off so I will need to design an alternate rod attachment point if I still want a valve controlled door.

Options are use the valve I bought and adapt to fit and repair the door attaching point.

Get a used box and valve if available.

Rig a rod coming out the bottom of the box attached to the door and manually control the recirc function.

The rig option may make folks skin crawl but in Texas we want max AC 90% of the year and thus would want the flap set to pull cabin air in.

Jim,
On the Stepson, I "rigged" the default flap to pull cabin air only by changing the spring position to the other side of the actuator.

I was told that by doing that I would get funky smells in the cabin (hasn't happened). my retort was why would I want 150 degree air coming off the Texas highway mixing with air that I am trying to cool. If I want fresh air, I'll open the damn window.

The "rigging" is totally reversible by pulling the fresh air box and swapping the spring back to the other side of the actuator, but I truly never see that ever happening on my car.

Also, I do have an extra fresh air box that I also "rigged" if you need it.

John,

The bad valve I have that was in the car is a single piece valve and sealed/ glued. It does not have the two piece design that would allow disassembly to swap the spring around.

Just buy a used flap assembly from a later car and install.

^^ I second that, that way you will be able to replace the part in the future if it ever goes bad again.

Can't you take the guts from the new valve and put it in the old housing? It is just the rubber cup inside that gets holes and leaks vacuum. I have taken these apart and it is pretty simple.

Good luck.

The failed valve is a sealed unit. it has a seam but is not designed to be disassembled like all the other valves on the car.

Jim,
Can you dremel it at the seams to get it apart, change the diaphragm and JB weld it back together. It might be worth.
