Hello to Everyone,

I am new here and I have spent a lot of time reading, searching etc... through the forum before signing up. However, I would like to pick some of your brains since you will certainly be more of the expert on these cars than I will.

I have always wanted a 928 and one has come up for sale locally but I have a few concerns that I would like to see what you guys have to say about them.

I am looking at an 1982 928 which looks to be in good shape on the outside and inside. Owner thinks it is a Euro version but I believe it is not due to the VIN. The car has 125,000 miles on it. However, the motor is where the issue is at. Before I go into the info on the 928 I will say the owner is wanting $3K for the car.

The owner says the car has euro headlights and a stainless borla exhaust. It does have the 5 speed transmission in it as well. The car needs a new fuel tank as the original tank has a leak in it. Owner says it leaks when pressurized and/or has more than 10 gallons in it.

The part I am concerned with is that the owner said the water pump seal was leaking so he hired someone to replace the pump. He knew it was a good times to change the belt, pullies etc.... However, the person he tired showed up a few times, took the front of the motor apart and then never showed up again. Owner said the motor ran great before this but was pulled into the garage and has sat in the garage ever since for 9 years. Owner said the timing belt never broke and was just changing it since it was a good time to while changing the pump.

I am mechanically inclined and have no issues repairing the car but I just don't know exactly where the value would be on this car since I am unable to start it, drive it etc...

So my question is what would you guys pay for this car? I do know some would say to run away, which I still might but I would like to get some advice on a value.

To put things into perspective, it is possible to buy a running car for this price.

Then again, if it looks like that's the exact project you are looking for, why not?

I would not buy it at that price in that condition and not running.

The interior looks fantastic!

If it hasn't run in almost 10 years it might take a decent amount of work to get it back on the road again. How many miles did it have on it when it was parked?

IMO, far overpriced for a non-running incomplete project.

If the seller won't take a fair lowball, and judging by how long it's been on craigslist he's probably turned down a few, then move on to some of the other choice 928 examples on Dallas/ Fort Worth and Houston craigslists. Like the running fine 84 5-spd asking not much more than this one (no affiliation).

Perhaps some of the DFW crew will chime in about this one.

$1500 tops, then fix it. It does not look like a Euro, and you can't determine if the odometer works, so you can't be sure of the mileage.

Not running basically makes it a project car or a parts car. There are tons of early 928's for sale that are runners.

Also letting it sit like that shows neglect by the owner.

Don't even barter if you want it, go back with $1500 cash and just be straight. I would say you can sell it to me right now or it can sit for another 9 years, your choice.

Two things to look for in a project 928, good paint and a good interior. Mechanics can be fixed.

Sorry to agree with so many, but it's not worth $3k. Even at a really low price, you're taking a risk on many things that you can't really test without driving it (gearbox, clutch) and you know that the time standing will have taken its toll. Realistically, it's a gamble, which I wouldn't put more than $1k on. You would need to part it out if you lose that bet.

I was thinking around the $1,000 to $1,200 range only because the body/interior is in great shape. It seems to be only the motor that is the glaring known mechanical issue with the rest being unknown.

Euros are usually easy to spot as they have side marker lights behind the front wheels. And the VIN should be full of Z's.

There is virtually nothing TOO special about the car in question. If you really want it, pick your price (i.e. $1200) and then arm yourself with the facts....

- Comparable ads for running 82-84 cars
- Price for a used engine from 928INTL (because it could be THAT bad)
- Price for parts to do a proper awakening (fuel tank, fuel pump, fuel lines in engine bay, water pump, timing belt, and other bits) from 928sRUs

I would then say, "I must be nucking futs because if I deduct the price of these things from the price of a running 82-84, I get that you should pay me $500 to tow this from your driveway. However, I'm a nice guy and probably the ONLY one passionate enough to want to pay you $1200." Have cash in hand and tell him you're not negotiating.

Near as i can tell, those headlamps aren't mounted correctly...or is it just me?

Interior is in above average condition, and if the paint is very good to excellent, then maybe its worth a gamble...but not for more than what others have suggested here and even then...there very well could be a world of hurt waiting for you in this car.

Very nice looking car but you really have to assume bigger problems in the whole car since they can't be tested. He probably is not fixing it for a reason. The potential for a diamond in the rough is there but not at that price.

Yes, the interior looks very nice but I'd low ball him at 500 and give him no more than 750 tops. You could tell him to keep it for a few more years if he doesn't like the offer. You could do better - he can't.

I don't think the "928S" on the back is stock, could be wrong but I've never seen it before. The interior looks good. I wouldn't go more than $2K on it, the wheels alone are worth $200/each if they're in good shape. Why is there a full sized spare in the back? That shouldn't be there, then again it's a 5th wheel with good resale value.

The front air intake tubes are missing. This is a BIG DEAL unless he has them in the garage somewhere. They're No Longer Available (NLA) and you need them to make the engine run right. With luck they're near wherever he put the radiator.

The seats are worth $300 each in good condition (as they appear to be). The manual transmission and clutch could be worth as much as $1500. I'd buy it for parts if you're handy. Offer him $1000 and you can't lose.

I'm probably wrong about those air ducts. I seem to remember Pelican has them for that year. It's the 85-86 you can't get anymore.
