Had another look at the tyre well where the previous owner has messed around with the wires. there is a flat plug with 4 wires coming from under the car. He has cut one of the wires and run a wire up the drivers side towards the front of the car. Haven't tried to see where that goes yet but when Ive found out I'll post some pics. Hopefully this will solve the issue with starting in gear, but maybe he has done it for a reason. I cant understand why anyone would make it so you can start in gear???

Maybe the neutral safety switch had failed and the car would not start ??? so they added a wire ?? pretty stupid since they could have used the bridge clip on the relay socket like the 5 speed.....But people do get very creative with this cars and often NOT in a good way !!! Still starting in gear is way too dangerous.

As James said, this is just a Mercedes Transmission.. A good Merc shop will know how to fix these once you convince them it is a merc transmission in a funky case. Parts are easily available, and fixes are relatively easy. they used these transmissions on a bunch of cars for a a long time. Just too bad the case is unique, so we can not bolt on a replacement, it is a rebuild. You should try to get everything adjusted first. Can also try to replace just the valve body, but if you are going to have to pull it, yo might as well go for the full rebuild if yo need it.

Look for a product called Trans x . You might just have a varnished up valve body. This stuff revives old transmissions. Drain off a quart of Trans fluid and replace with Trans x. Drive and soon your problems should disappear. Use a quart in every fluid change to keep it running well. I did this in my. 84 and it runs great after trying everything else. Before you rebuild try Trans x you won't regret it.

Just driven the car and by the feel and sounds of it, it may have a high stall converter installed. Would this delay the 3rd gear change or am I still dreaming that this is normal for this trans???

In my car, the shifting is smooth, no delay getting to third unless hammer down.
