Default Cross country trip in 1989 928 S4

I will be purchasing an extremely well maintained 1989 928 S4 on 5/22 in Las Vegas. I have waited 5 years to find the right one and I think this is it. I am planning to drive it from Vegas to Connecticut the last week in June. Planning on doing 6 hour days and taking my time to cross the country. I am looking for some advise from people who have accomplished this journey and maybe some contacts just in case. I am planning on heading north and traveling on 70 and 80. Any advise will be appreciated. I have thick skin so criticism is welcome to.

Car has 155000 miles on it and all maintenance is up to date. Most of the maintenance received better than stock parts. All maintenance is documented for last 5 years.
Thank you for you input.

Make sure the A/C really, really works well..... get a couple extra #53 relays. And 6 hours of driving is easy, too easy in a 928. When I drive to or from Lubbock Texas from Costa Mesa Ca. I do 1,200 miles in one day and often in something less than a 928.

Welcome! The PPI revealed no mechanical issues whatsoever? Tell us more about the car- we're a visual bunch and so pictures will greatly enhance the worth of this discussion.

Welcome to the tank.

You've got some knowledgeable people in Vegas to check the car out. +928 to Jim on working AC.

Columbus, Ohio has an active 928 group. I'm 5 minutes off I-70, 50 miles east of Columbus and 9-12 hours short of Connecticut.

Jim's also right that six hours is a very easy day. If you don't have to hustle back, you might try some non-interstate dawdling, even some zigzagging. There are a lot of cool places and stuff between Vegas and the Nutmeg State.

AAA top-level membership is a good idea. Karmic judo - if you have it you won't need it.

The car is in very good mechanical shape TB done 4K ago with Porken tensioner/ 928 motorsport radiator with dual fan upgrade. PK clamp installed. AC is getting recharged. All work has been done at Carl's in Vegas. Doing PPI on 5/22. Previous owner was phenomenal with maintenance. It was a daily driver for the last 55K in Las Vegas. One way 75 mile trips daily. Have all receipts for last 5 years, grand total of 26K.

I remember Carl. Quite the character. Knew him from Open Road Racing. I believe he attended every ORR race ever held prior to his death. Colonel in the USAF too. One of the good guys.

I have driven two sharks across the country. It is an awesome thing to do. Had one little hiccup with my alternator when I drove my current car from VA to MT. Make sure you have a good tool set - sockets; pliers; flashlight, work gloves, duct tape, etc (there is a basic tool set in the back of the car, but it is better to bring more stuff for emergency road side repairs). Have AAA just in case, and read the AAA standard for towing Porches so that you can make sure the truck driver doesn't mess up if the need arises.
I am in Pittsburgh and my contact info is on the 928 Owners Club site. Join that group and this board to get the most access to info. The 928OC site will list all of the club "den mothers" across the country, so you will have lots of resources if you need them.

Do it. 8-10 hours in these seats is perfectly doable.

Working A/C is really important.

A decent radar detector is a good idea. A CB is nice, but not necessary. Good music is nice, but then again, so is the music of the motor, tires and wind (not kidding on that).

A good tool set, spare fuses and a few spare 53 relays is a good idea. Duct tape, glues (JB weld, superglue & silicone gasket maker), some PB Blaster, some Deoxit, a crimper and a few connectors, all will help your peace of mind, whether you need them or not. Murphy's Law says that anything you have with won't be needed, right?

I'm doing a Wisconsin to California trip very soon, and I will post the story on it. I've already done a couple mid-length trips in it, 300 & 500 miles each, one day jaunts.

It's designed and intended for trips just like this.

It would be a shame not to use the car for what it was meant for, wouldn't it?

I am in Iowa (45 min north of I-80) and can help if you are a few hours away. Have had other Porsche cross country drivers stop and rest here so offer is open if you want a slight detour north.

I have done Atlanta in one day from here (12 hours). New Orleans in one day from here (14 hours), Dallas in one day from here (13 hours), Greg Brown's shop in two days (30 hours). You'll love your car on the highway. It was made to do that.

good luck on your trip.
I suggest to refill the tank when it gets to 1/4,
this will keep more fuel,
thus cooler fuel in the system.

Thanks to all the responses! I will buy a good tool kit in Vegas...and all the needed accessories. I have waited a long time for this trip. Please elaborate on AAA towing a Porsche is there a special hitch?

The tow hook should be in the tool rack along the back wall off the rear hatch. There is a tow point above the rear license plate and on the passenger side of the front grill.

The population of White 89's in CT just went up by 50%. See you around.
