Default Should I trash my broken catalytic converter?

Hi guys,
I am cleaning up parts after my supercharger project. I installed a y-pipe. When I removed my cat, one of the arms of the Y fell off. I think the cat is OK otherwise. Can this be repaired if it is needed in the future?
Thanks,
Dave

Don't toss it. If anything, send it to Mark A at 928 International as it can be welded back up and they need cats in Ca.

Even in damaged/worn out condition, there is value as they contain platinum. But, I would agree with SeanR and try to keep these in the 928 family.

I gave my old cat as payment to the welder who made up my y pipe. Pretty cheap labor! I'm pretty sure the cat was totally rotten after 32 years so it went for scrap.

When platinum prices peaked used ones were something like $400 to metal recovery places. Its not so much age and how long was it run with AFR mucked up. Always good AFR and they last a very long time.

Maybe not so cheap labor. Scrap metal dealers pay top $$ for converters regardless of age. As long as the catalyst matrix is still there it's worth a bunch. Prices depend on the going rate for platinum.

And it's not just Platinum, although it is the most prevalent.
Palladium and Rhodium are also used in catalytic converters.
All three are extremely expensive noble metals...

Hi Dave, to answer your question YES it can be welded. I'd guess
one (Welder) would need to add good metal around the corroded area after
tacking it in place while bolted up to the manifolds.
Then i'd remove it and finish the welding repair on a table.
You can buy the welding spool needed, i have one for stainless.

Mark A cannot use used cats, I asked him if he wanted mine
and he told me it was not legal to resell them in CA.

I have a very nice one from my '83 if you need it. -Matt

Thanks, Matt. I have scrap metal guys who go through my alley by my house. Looks like they can have it. Good to know there is a spare if needed, and thanks so much.

FWIW, I sold the BMW 635 cat with rusted pipe on Ebay for close to $400. Bought another used cat from parts car for $150.

I busted out all the insides of my '78 cat with a length of angle iron and threw it in the garbage. Oops.
