How ad is this ? I'm guessing bad enough that I shouldn't drive to SITM with them.

If there were zero play the ball bearings would be wearing directly against the carrier with zero grease to lubricate them.

^^^ and .... unless you somehow locked off the flanged stub shaft out of side of the diff case, quite a proportion of that rotational play is ring/pinion backlash.
