Default Tow Hook Thread Chaser

Hello Shark Tank,

The right rear of my shark is making a TERRIBLE metal-on-metal banging noise at low speeds. I have researched lots of threads and I believe it is the CV boot / bearings. I'd prefer to tow it vs. drive to the shop 30 miles away. So, I started looking into threads to find where my tow hook eye was, and dreading the seized bolt and ... It was not there! But, the threads look a bit rusty and there is some debris in there. I now know I can get the plastic cover, but, I'm going to need to clean up the threads. Does anyone know where I could find the thread chaser that is the right size for my '84 OB?

Many thanks,

Josh

There is a tow hook thread chaser on-loan within the community to whoever needs to use it.

I think Alan is the project director?

Careful here - your car looks like an OB - at least NOT an S4 - assuming thats it in your avatar? Early cars have a 15mm (actually 9/16") OD thread towing eye, where S4 onwards are 20mm(actually 0.8") OD. Same thread pitch of 8tpi.
Check the size of your towing eye, as the tap on distribution is the large version. I do not know of one for the smaller size, but I have not previously heard of a small thread receiver being damaged.

dont flat tow your car,
put it on a flat bed and have it moved without rolling.

If your hearing a grinding noise and your not capable of investigating the noise,
have the car looked at by a professional.

Flat towing could possibly cause catastrophic damage especially going 30 miles.

Towing with the tow hook is only meant for emergency use.

This idea you have about towing could possibly cause the tow hook to be broken as side loading can snap it

Thanks for all of the advice, guys. Yes, my car is an OB so the thread tap wouldn't work. I got lucky yesterday and got in there with some WD-40 and a toothbrush and cleaned up the threads. Added some anti-seize after. The tow hook goes in just fine now. I am going to have the car flatbed towed to a 928 specialist at Gulf Performance in about a month. I was just figuring that it would be easiest to pull the car onto the flatbed nose-first using the tow hook. Please correct me if there is a better way to get it onto the flatbed.

Again, thank you!

You may have more clearance height tail first - but all you need is enough to get it on (or use planks).

Remember that if you need it, you can get more clearance for the load-on by jacking the front end and then letting it down. That''ll get you an inch or two until the suspension settles.

You could do the same for the offload if the suspension settles over the tow trip, which it probably will.

LOL. Hope it helps.

It's a feature, not a bug.
