This is getting embarrassing but my hatch is still leaking. I've thrown in the towel and purchased a new seal. It is definitely coming through the seal as I've sorted through the sunroof issues as well.
I am thinking that I may have installed the previous one backwards (way back when) and maybe bent the metal support as to have ruined but no way to tell for sure. There are two flanges (lips) on the seal, a long and a short one.
I am guessing that the long one is installed facing OUTward because installing the other way the flange just overhangs into the cabin not serving much purpose. A previous post I was advised outward. Getting this wrong affects the geometry of the seal as it is not symmetric but tilted to one side. So facing the long flange to the outside has the effect of orienting the "tilt" of the seal to the inside which to me seems counter intuitive. I say this because when installed this way, the seal is then interfering with the hatch striker, even when I adjust the striker as far forward as possible. I'll try to post photo of the seal as it is installed now to clarify. I am asking again to make sure I get this right the first time. (Also will take MRMerlin's advice and use Hondabond).
Thanks all.

the seal gets installed with the air holes facing into the car this lets the seal collapse .
NOTE if the holes are installed outwards then water can enter the seal.
From the picture the seal is installed the wrong way..
take it off and follow these instructions.
