Various tricks that may help:
- Apply a little bit of penetrating oil or similar. Depending on the product I would try to limit how much gets onto the plastic just in case it is not good for it.
- Try tapping the FAN further onto the shaft. There may be some movement there that will help it break free. I cannot recall if you can release the split pin that goes through the shaft and stops the fan rotating on it while the fan is in place. If you could this would assist with getting movement started.
- If you can find a way of supporting the fan well (say by placing a couple of strips of steel across a vice with the motor sitting just loose between the jaws) and then using a drift to punch the shaft out.
- Persistence, persistence, persistence.....

Hope this helps.

Myles,
Was able to get it off by having the motor 'suspended'. Used my old Workbench and had the fan housing on the wooden slats. Used PB to penetrate and spent a good amount of time jimmying the motor and shaft up and down. Finally I put a hammer, and a wide punch, to it and it descended. I decided to fix the one and add a new bearing to the other preventatively. Pulling the shroud in my car is a chore for I had fabricated and rebuilt the entire power harness from starter/alternator to the front points. It is a very thick copper cable with aeronautic fiberglass and silicon wrap. I does take up much space in the area of the 14 pin connector which makes shroud removal a chore.

Both fans work !
Both with more vigor... sounds good and reassuring.
Thanks Myles... would not have been possible for me had it not have been for your excellent write up.

And...
Sorry I couldn't take pictures, for if I could've, I would've. My kids left the Nikon SLR out in the rain. My wife and daughter have iPhones, but my phone is only semi smart.

Default Sorrowful Update.

The driver's side radiator fan is now seized. When I changed the bearing it was looking a little 'worn' in there.
I'm simply going to replace. Didn't need this now.
Pulled fuse 28 and will run on one fan for a bit.

You can replace the fan with a stock one - new or used - or if you would like to work on the front of your engine without removing the fan assembly ever time I would recommend Hans' low profile dual fan set up. I saw it a SITM and it is very nice.

Yes, thanks Kevin.
Hans had images of it here recently. Will give this some consideration. Would probably do the addition of Hans' unit in 17k miles when it is TB/WP time and have complete teardown up front. Now I'll just go through the motions of throwing a new fan in the existing shroud.
