Haven't done it for a while but I'm sure I only needed a big c-clamp. Didn't need to fiddle with sockets just squeezed the bushing back.

The original trick with the sockets was because the rear end of the bushing needs room to come out of the ear a bit to get the front pushed back flush with the inside of the ear. Updating methods to use the bolt as a driver as I described in post 11 above means no exotic tool beyond the soft-faced hammer for the hex end of the bolt. Plus you can more easily see where the bushing sits as you tap on the bolt.

The Good News is that I don't have that many opportunities to swing the alternator in and out on my car. Maybe four or five times in fifteen-plus years. So it takes me a while to think up better solutions.

Question: It looks like you have the oil return plugged with a cover, how did you get the return in and out with the alternator bracket in the way? I am not only replacing the alternator but the alternator bracket as well and I could not get to the left most bolt in the alt bracket without taking the oil return tube off. Now I cannot get the screw on the right of the return tube neck installed to save my life. The boss right above it is blocking it and it feels like the screw is too long to go in and straight down.

This seems like a magic trick, I can't get the bracket in and out with return in place and I can't get the return in and out with the bracket in place. I have to be missing something here.

This seems like my last obstacle but I had to give up and sleep on it last night. Very frustrating.

Later cars do not have that oil return pipe, hence the block off plate . But I feel your pain. It's a bear but it can be done
