In my 105,000 mile '86 S, i replaced both disks and the intermediate plate about 5,000 miles and two years ago. Now, when i release the clutch from a stand still, i get a very noticable clank from the rear of the car. it sounds similar to a loose U joint in a traditional driveline vehicle. if i back off and reapply throttle in 1st gear it clanks each time. when i release the clutch verrrrry slowly i can almost eliminate the clank. do i have a defective $1,200 clutch? any ideas?

Check the driveline carefully. Could be loose collars iat the ends of the touque tube.
Jack the rear and work the wheels back and forth. Do it in gear and in neutral. If something is loose you'll hear it. Note that the CV joints will have a bit of play. Could still be suspension parts or brake pads moving. Or something else.

it clanks/clunks when i engage the clutch only, not when i disengage. mostly from stop, but it will do it going to 2nd sometimes. if the clutch is engaged and i'm in 1st it will do it when i give it little gas and then release gas pedal. it clanks ALOT when i do that. i thought it might be a transmission mount, but my shop checked it out and tightened all external components. it sounds as if something is very loose somewhere inside the driveline components.
