There's a recent thread here discussing that auction car.

Correct this Saturday... If anyone is serious about this car you can contact Wade Souter at Mecum.. He is my son in law's cousin. Nice guy used to handle telephone bids but he can hook you up.

I'm not going for two primary reasons:
  1. I need another 928 like a I need a hole in the head. I can't justify having two of them, and I can't bring myself to sell my current GT - it's my favorite color, is well sorted, and I'm very attached to it.
  2. I can drive the one I have now and not feel bad about putting some miles on it - ditto for tasteful, reversible modifications. The Mecum car looks to be collector quality and needs to be placed in a time capsule IMHO.

With that said, before my brain overruled my heart I did some due diligence and found nothing of concern. It appears to be at most a two-owner car, with the same owner since at least 1995 at approx 12K miles. Options are light and the usual ones, nothing of note there:
  • M158 Radio, Blaupunkt Reno
  • M220 Locking Differential - 40%
  • M393 Club Sport - Forged Wheels - 8x16 front, 9x16 rear
  • M418 Side Protection Moldings
  • M474 Shock Absorber (SPORTING) Front and Rear
  • M481 Manual Transmission
  • M570 Air Conditioner with Improved Efficiency (Rear A/C)
  • M639 Special Version "GT"
  • M650 Electrical Sliding Roof
Who knows what it will go for? Mecum isn't exactly the best place to market this car, but you only need two motivated and knowledgeable buyers to make it interesting. I'm aware of one such bidder who will be in attendance - if he wants to out himself he can do so. Will there be another???

True. I was thinking one bidder for there to be a sale, two bidders going at it to get a high price. Am I wrong?

For those interested, you can stream the auction live. It is free, you have to register w/Mecum which means they will send you email ads, til doomsday, and you can then unsubscribe.

This car (S118) is set to go at 2 PM on Saturday. (I will be tilling the garden at that time Saturday as a preventive measure.) Some listings have a time, some don't I haven't tried to see how accurate their prediction is when I'm watching the stream. But they seem to follow chronologically the listing numbers.

YES !! at many auctions there are phantom bids where the auctioneer just runs up the bid......ever see where they stop and backup often indicates the high bidder did not "bid" . More common on cars with reserves but at many sales the auction company OWNS and SELLS some cars for their own profit so bidders will get run up ....is there REALLY someone on the other end of that telephone ????
Just part of the game hard on the 50% of the people who are new buyers at most sales. Have a few "free" drinks and get on T V But they still only pay what they think is a fair price just maybe more than it might have been.

Thanks for the insight. I had wondered how things could be manipulated.

I'll be watching this one online at Mecum.com. Should be interesting.

Yep so many ways ..... it is a jungle out there. Mecum really has a good reputation and is far better than some other more "established" names in my opinion.
My daughter and Son in law are promoting/running an Auction Saturday in Lubbock Texas 170 cars consigned real numbers, no gimmicks , reasonable fees, and car order number drawn by chance, no favoritism ! No T V either

Watching today's auction action right now. Commentary on the last car--"I really love it when you can see the manufacturer of the brakes without having to squint or look hard. (Other guy): Well, you know that depends on how thin the wheel spokes are. When the spokes are thin, you can really see who manufactured those brakes."

Sometimes those guys sound encyclopedic--"the last year they used that color spring on the throttle plate was 1967; in '68 the Director of Carburetors' sister married the CEO of Throttle Springs Unlimited (TSU) who she met at the Four-Barrel Bash, which led to a new supplier relationship. You can always tell those post-1968 carburetors because that spring is more silver than it is gray"--other times...

But I never tire of looking at the cars.

It is obvious when they have research (provided?) and when they don't. I'll leave it at that. A feature of the streaming video is that all you hear is the auctioneer, no other commentary, I guess that can be good or not, it was refreshing at first.
