Question Wrong paint code from Porsche dealer.

I have finally confirmed my ext color code.

The car has been in the shop for some time now and it is now down to bare metal and aluminum. There has been no change of color on this car since manufacture. However I have been having difficulty with identifying the color code. The sticker in the back has pealed off and there was no code on the drivers doorsill.

So I stopped by the service dept on one of my weekly visits to the parts counter. I had the service rep pull up my vin's file and got some good info. Paint code, full list of options ordered at purchase, and I found out my car has not been in for the exhaust heat shield recall.

Porsche says the car (MY87S4) is 37W - Midnight blue metallic. I thought that Midnight blue was much darker than my car so I had him verify it, and he did, 37W.

Still doubtful I looked at the Australia 928 paint section (Nice web site 928 Australia ) and was even more doubtful.

I then looked up the available paint for MY87 in the maint manuals and I found that Midnight blue metallic was not offered until MY91!

Another call to dealer.........37W.

I then went back to the paint shop (they are getting ready to shoot), and they pulled all the Porsche paint codes and we confirmed the shark is Venice blue metallic (36P)-35U!

Anyone out there ran into this before?

I had a similar problem with my paint code but slightly different from yours...

I do have a door jam VIN sticker for my '83 which displays the paint code as P2 (Chiffon White)....The car paint is original and the rear cargo factory sticker is missing.... According to online 928 sources there's NO paint code P2 for the Porsche 928 for any model year....There is however a P2 colour code for the Porsche 911 for the '83 model year!

To confuse things even further for me, I found out recently, that the Porsche 928 Chiffon White colour code is NOT at all P2 (as indicated on the VIN sticker at the door) but it's labeled L182 or 182 and it has a lighter tint than the P2 Chiffon White.....The same name but a slightly different colour.....

So of course I ordered the wrong colour tint from the local paint shop when I had to respray my front bumper for scratches. I got a price break from them when I went back, explained the situation and ordered the correct paint.

Moral of the story: even the factory labels can be wrong at times!

Hello VK,

From a quick look at the 928 maint manuals I think there was only "2" colors of white offered on the 928.

Here is what I found:

1978
Grand Prix White - 908

1979
Grand Prix White - 908

1980
Grand Prix White - 908

1981
Chiffon White - 182
Grand Prix White - 908

1982
Chiffon White - 182
Grand Prix White - 908

1983
Grand Prix White - 908

1984
Chiffon White - 182
Grand Prix White - 908

1985- on
Grand Prix White - 908
* NLA Chiffon White - 182
