I'm looking at an early 928 - VIN 9288100175

Can anyone tell from the VIN whether the car is originally a RHD or LHD?

It's RHD now but has the hood release on the passenger side!

Any help much appreciated.

To my knowledge, the first RHD 928 is 9288100216, so I doubt 9288100175 was delivered as a RHD.

But only Porsche can tell you for sure.
