Default Where are 928 prices going these days?

I notice more late model cars listed with astronomic prices lately.

In February, a 91 S4 with low mileage sold for a crazy amount on eBay (low 30ies). Cars with mid-mileage (50-60k) are listed with asking prices in the high 20ies.

We've never seen such prices before this spring - at least not in the past 15 years.

Is there a shortage of good 928s?
Are collectors cherry picking a few low mileage examples at high prices?
Or are the sellers simply crazy asking these amounts, and rarely sell for those prices?

they are inching up for sure, and sometimes leaping, depending on model. The GTSs appear to be commanding a premium over what they were already getting. Early year cars in good shape are likewise moving up.

Several exceptional cars have been sold. My sad guess is that some long time owners are dying.

This is also the start of ask high prices season.

All in all I think less is going on directly related to the 928, and more is related to movement in the economy at least at the upper end.

At techno classica in Essen this year there were about 5 GTS. Prices were between 40 and 50K in US $ (30-35K in €)! Last couple of years one was lucky to see one ,now we've even seen one on the way up there. Sharks are rising :-)

EBay may not be a reflection of the real world, but lots of completed listings are for low low prices. I'm not seeing much of a trend.

generally speaking just about ALL sports cars collector cars have rebounded and many are setting new records. Many are asking really stupid money....and possibly getting it. Real estate has gone up a great deal, the stock market is at record highs, interest rates cd rates are very, very low so "investment" in something you can drive, see, and touch has a lot of appeal.
When early 911S casr are over $100,000 and 356s sometimes double that ......914s at 10-20 k little wonder people are discovering the 928 and it is a V-8

A '91 is over 22 years old. Ones with under 40k miles are extremely rare, and getting rarer ever year, so, with a decent economy, the price premium has increased. Good 928s are difficult to find - there are lots of frogs out there. I had to travel over 3000 miles to find another.

Higher mileage cars, without exceptional maintenance, have not seen the same rise.

That eBay car (37k miles, well maintained) is the best indicator (for an auto) that I have seen, with the sale price being public ($31,450).

The Hagerty Insurance site has a valuation tool that you can use to see how they see the market moving, showing historical trends. I've looked at it for my 91 S4 and it shows a slight increase over the last year. Of course condition is everything. Here is a link if you want to take a look.

Autoweek March 17-31 Market Column: "Oftentimes, collectors gravitate to the first and last of a series of cars. That seems to be happening to the Porsche 928." That article goes on to say of a sale of an 87 S4, sold at $15,400, "at this price, it is still a bargain." (Submitted as a data point.)

Perhaps the 928 had reached the bottom of the depreciation scale and now there is nowhere to go but up.

8-series Bimmers and early NSXs are starting to climb out of the "used car valley" .. my hope is that 928s are beginning the ascent as well. I always keep an eye on "cars to buy now" (both the magazine articles of this ilk and just my personal observations - though I never have the cash to act) and it seems like the 928 has had a longer duration in the valley than most. But it's hard to not see it climbing out sometime soon.

As noted earlier here, good '80s 911s are just starting to climb hard. Which sucks since I was hoping to get the wife a stable mate of that vintage. She had a green SC hotwheels/matchbox as a kid and always wanted one.

(After the 911 I'm thinking about luxo barges - E38s or XJ12s... got a few years of bargains there yet, I think.)

That link shows very little movement in prices since 2007 then a jump up in early 2013 and steady since then.

eBay is the real world. That doesn't mean that I like it though

My observation is that low mileage cars and the GTS have been rising in value. Most others haven't (probably with the exception of some versions that I wasn't following, e.g. '89 manual).

Interesting... Haggerty doesn't seem to factor-in mileage - other than part of the vehicle condition.
