Install Front Light Clear Filler Pieces?
Awhile ago somebody kindly sent me a couple aftermarket clear filler pieces designed to replace the small black 'bumper' sections.
Any tips on how I go about installing them?
Thanks.

Randy,
It's been a while, but goes something like this...
Remove turn signal assy
Drill out rivets on side of black metal bracket.
Remove front wheel well cover
Unscrew nuts on backside of black metal bracket
Here's where it gets fuzzy...
You may need to counterhold nuts from frontside.
If so, find a helper because you won't be able to reach both yourself.
Installing the filler is easy with black metal piece removed.
That's the best I got. Good luck!

I took AO's advice and "wizzed" off that black bumper piece. If you do cut it off, it'll take a couple cutting wheels.

I installed mine without removing the black bracket....and it sits flush with the other lights. Below are the istructions I sent to another member 12 years ago:
After looking at everything, it's actually pretty simple. I'll do my best to describe how this should be done (without pictures)...haven't had time to take pics for a better explanation.
My 87 s4 should be identical to yours...
1. The clear plastic filler between the fog lamp & turn signal should be made-up of 2 pieces. These must be separated. You can only use the outer piece (which looks perfectly fine).
2. Remove the fog lamp to avoid and damage
3. The black bracket has 2 screw retaining clips. These must be removed. Do not destroy these because you must use 1 of these clips for each filler piece.
4. If you look at the fog lamp (side closest to the turn signal) you will see a hole in the outer edge (center). You must insert a clip (removed from the black bracket) over this hole. You will attach the clear plastic piece directly to the fog lamp.
5. If you try installing the fog lamp (with the filler attached) in place, you will notice that the filler will hit the black bracket. You will have to file (notch) the black bracket to make sure that the whole assembly (light & clear plastic) will fit. You should paint the front of the black bracket silver, this way it looks like a part of the light assembly.
6. Once this has been done, you must remove the plastic filler.
7. Remount the fog lamp
8. Remount the plastic filler
9. Repeat the steps on the other side

I tried to remove the black metal frame from mine while the bumper was on the car... with zero luck. With the foglight assemblies out, you may be able to grind off the attachment points, but Nicole told me that wouldn't work either.
Bumper has to come off.
Not sure WHAT Roger is talking about in his post... as clearly these pieces are only 1 piece -not 2 piece. And, for God's sake -do not alter them! They won't fit properly if you do.
The screw in the clear trim pieces actually screws into the fog light assembly (see green dot on your pic) using one of the 'speed nut' clips from the bracket (red boxes).

I dont have a set, but would there be a way to just mount that clear piece over the bracket...after painting it silver perhaps so it doesnt show through?

You may be able to combine some of the steps from Jadz928 & NoVector... remove turn signal & foglight assemblies & using a cut-off wheel (or several: dremel sized for clearance), remove the front portion of the black bracket. It will be a challenge to cut through the metal without slipping and then cutting into your paint.
Roger's step #4 is correct... once the black bracket is cut out or PROPERLY removed (bumper off, or 2+ people).

I can confirm that these are 2 parts, almost like an outer lens and an inner bit. I know because we get sand/dust in between those 2 parts out here, and it can really ruin the look!

As part of the transition from Hooked on Cars to 928 Classics, I have provided Jim Doerr with all instructions for this modification.
It is up to Jim whether he wants to make the instructions part of a product offering, or publish them here.

Hey Randy, don't let these big meanies scare you. Go to post #26 of the thread I posted (above) and follow what "Gearz" wrote. Note his comment about a couple strips of thick tape around the work area for added protection. His picture is how the black bumper piece should look when finished.
Since our cars are the same color, thought you'd like to see what it'll look like when you're finished--assuming you have clear turn signals too. If you don't, I wouldn't bother with this project.

I'd be most concerned about damaging the paint, though. If that happens, your little project may get very expensive.

If you have the ROW front light cluster - they just screw in...
I know it doesn't help - but it is a nice upgrade for other reasons too..
