Stop calliing it a relay - its a Blower Resistor Pack and the front and rear versions are not the same.

There are several front versions over the years that are not directly compatible (different pinouts) You ideally need one that directly matches or you will have to do some connector modifications (pin swapping).

Has someone ome up with an alternative, or a temporary solution like a floating resistor that will keep the ystem running, but not adjustable?

Well one has to take Porsche's assigned names with a pinch of salt sometimes since they can be so STUPID!

After all - these two names you just quoted are for exactly the same functional item. Functionaly it isn't a Switch or a single Series Resistor or a Relay ... It's a Blower Resistor Pack (or some other 'multiple' adjective). In the wiring diagrams it is called initially a Fresh Air Blower Resistance Unit (~accurate) and later Resistance Group (the latter becoming a worse translation).

Common usage here is Blower Resistor Pack for all years because it's at the same time concise, functionally meaningful and technically accurate.

You can unplug the resistor pack and still run the fan on high (4) - nothing else is needed.
